Round 9, Motorola 220 August 17-19, 2001, Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

Event: Round 9 of the 12-event CART Toyota Atlantic Championship, will be held on the 4.048-mile road course at Road America, as the weekend's feature support race at the Motorola 220. Sunday's race will mark the seventh time since 1990, the Atlantic series has competed on the historic track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Race Series: The CART-sanctioned Toyota Atlantic Championship is a key rung on CART's "Ladder System", and is noted for its long history of graduating its stars into CART competition. Among the drivers who have graduated from the Atlantic series are CART Champ car stars Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser, Richie Hearn, Patrick Carpentier Alex Tagliani, and Memo Gidley, former Champ Car stars Bobby Rahal and Danny Sullivan, as well as 1997 FIA Formula One Champion, Jacques Villeneuve.

Atlantic: Friday, August 17: Practice 11:30 a.m.--12:10 p.m. Qualifying 3:30 p.m.-- 4:00 p.m.

Saturday, August 18: Practice 9:00 a.m.-- 9:40 a.m. Qualifying 12:15 p.m-- 12:45 p.m.

Sunday, August 19: Warm-Up 8:30 a.m.--8:45 a.m. RACE 2:30p.m.-- 3:30 p.m. (17 laps/68.816 miles)

Atlantic: The CART Toyota Atlantic Championship has raced at Road America six times,

The previous Atlantic winners at Road America were: Jimmy Vasser (1990), Patrick Carpentier (1996), Alex Barron (1997), Anthony Lazzaro (1998), Andrew Bordin (1999), and Buddy Rice (2000).

Last Year: Buddy Rice entered the 2000 Round 9 race at Road America with a 17-point lead on English rookie, Daniel Wheldon. Rice's daring late race pass on Wheldon propelled him to the win and increased his point lead to 22 points with three races remaining.

Martin Basso shattered the track record on Saturday with a time of 2:02.734 seconds (118.735 mph) earning his first ever CART Toyota Atlantic Championship pole. Basso led the first lap but was overtaken early by David Rutledge. By lap 5, Rice had taken over the lead from his seventh start spot with Wheldon close behind.

After two cautions, Wheldon took the lead away from Rice, but it was short lived as Rice recovered the lead on the 14th lap getting two tires in the grass on the fast straight heading toward Turn 12. Shortly after, the third and final caution of the race came out allowing Rice to coast to the victory. Wheldon finished second followed by Basso, Andrew Bordin and Alex Gurney.

Television: ESPN2 and ESPN International will broadcast Sunday's Round 9 race from Road America on Sunday, August 26, at 10:00 a.m. ET, while Atlantic fans in Canada can watch the race on CTV SportsNet on Tuesday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the East, Ontario and Pacific time zones, 4:00 p.m. in the West Zone. CTV repeat dates are: ONTARIO, Monday, August 27, 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 28, 1:00 p.m., WEST, Tuesday, August 21, 7:00 p.m. There are no repeat dates for the EAST and PACIFIC time zones. ESPN2 will replay the race on Saturday, September 1, at 4:30 a.m. ET.
