The stunning performance of this young Venezuelan driver, who in 2005, his first year in the US won two championships in the US Formula Ford FF.2000, and is a top 3 driver in this years Cooper Tires Zetec Championship, was good enough to get a call from the Canadian based top Champ Car Atlantic team Jensen Motor Sport, in order to finish the 2006 season for the team in the 4 remaining races.
His first appearance at the Atlantic Series will be at San Jose, California next Sunday July 30. At such a short notice, there is no time for a private test day, and Ricardo's first contact ever with the new Atlantic car will be next Friday July.28, for one short practice session, and he will go straight to qualifying.
This move means a unexpected mayor boost in his career as a professional race car driver, as Champ Car Atlantic Series is an important showcase for the top open wheel Champ Car World Series.
Ricardo Vassmer, sponsored by Zoom Group, will use this remaining four 2006 Champ Car Atlantic races as a valuable training step for his upcoming 2007 season.
Vassmer commented during a press conference celebrated in his home town Caracas last Friday:
"The call from Jensen Motor Sports was big surprise. I am absolutely delighted to drive for such a top team in one of the most prestigious Series in the United States, Mexico and Canada and I will do my best to live up to this great challenge. Having no time for testing, it will be quite a challenge to run this 1.6 mile long, bumpy and narrow street course. Avoiding the concrete walls around the track, will be my main objective for the next weekend."
The car Ricardo will race at Jensen Motor Sports was Steven Ott's car, who had a podium finish at Cleveland, and was a consistent top ten driver with the team. Ricardo will team up with the British driver Tim Bridgman, former UK Formula BMW Champion.
The 2006 Formula Atlantic car is a brand new design by Swift, with a 300 HP Mazda engine, sequential gear box and ground effect, and run on Yokohama spec race slicks.
Mayor names emerged from this category, like Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Andretti, Boby Rahal, who's son Graham is competing in this series this year, Keke Rosberg, Jimmy Vasser and Al Unser Jr, between many others.
