MADISON, Ill. (May 23, 1998) - MCI Racing Team/Precision Preparation, Inc. (PPI) driver Anthony Lazzaro drove the MCI-Swift to a third place finish in today's KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship race at Gateway International Raceway. His teammate, Masaoki Nagashima, finished 14th in his second KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship event. Lazzaro started on the pole for the third race of the 1998 Atlantic season and led the 22 car field for much of the race. Lazzaro also recorded the fastest lap of the race. Nagashima qualified 13th in the Panasonic Duskin-Swift. His 14th-place finish is a career-best in Atlantic competition.
"Unfortunately, the race was shortened by rain," said Lazzaro. "The guys on the MCI crew did a super job of preparing a fast car. It showed by getting the fastest lap of the race. Those guys (the drivers) ganged up on me in the beginning and drafted by me. I was wide open and I couldn't do anything about it; I just needed a few laps to get back by them."
Before the race Lazzaro said, "After the Nazareth accident, it is really gratifying to come back to St. Louis and be quickest in every session and be on the pole. It shows how strong this MCI/PPI team is. We haven't had a chance to prove it all year and St. Louis is the first time. We're looking at it as if this were our first race of the season. I feel good. I know I have a good car; the team's been doing a super job. I have a lot of confidence in the car. I have everything I need to win." The next race for the PPI Atlantic team will be Saturday, May 30, 1998 at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis.
"Milwaukee is the place where I won my first Atlantic race in 1996 with far less than I have now," said Lazzaro. "It's a track that I enjoy driving on; I enjoy ovals in general. But Milwaukee has been good to me. I finished both years I've been there and I'm looking forward to a good race next weekend."
