CHAMP CAR ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP WELCOMES COOPER TIRE, UNVEILS NEW SERIES LOGO
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (October 31, 2006) -- Officials from the Champ Car Atlantic Championship joined representatives from new series sponsor and exclusive tire supplier Cooper Tire today to unveil the new logo for the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
Cooper Tire showcased the new series logo (see attached file) Tuesday at a special press conference at the SEMA Show automotive trade spectacular at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Champ Car World Series President Steve Johnson and Champ Car Atlantic Managing Director Vicki O'Connor joined Cooper officials at the press conference as the company discussed its new marketing and product promotional efforts for 2007. Details of Cooper's new three-year partnership with the Atlantic Championship were discussed as well as the tire company plans to maximize it newest motorsports relationship beginning in 2007.
"Cooper has a lot of great ideas and concepts that tie in perfectly with the Atlantic Championship and we know they're going to bring a high-quality product to the race track," said O'Connor. "We're very happy to unveil the new series logo today, which showcases both series sponsors Cooper Tire and Mazda, and we're definitely excited to start growing and cultivating this new partnership."
"The Cooper/Champ Car Atlantic partnership is mutually beneficial. We have conducted extensive testing with the newly-designed Swift 016.a chassis and have been able to provide a tire that allows for the best possible setup for optimal performance of both the car and tire. The Cooper Tire racing slick allows for more adjustments in the mid-range, giving teams and drivers more scope overall. We are confident that the tires will meet and exceed the teams' expectations, resulting in high-level competitive racing," said Julian Baldwin, as Vice President, European Operations, and Managing Director, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe.
Atlantic competitors have already begun testing the new Cooper Atlantic racing tire and the new rubber will make its official debut at the first series pre-season open test, scheduled for January 28-29, 2007 in Sebring, Florida. While Cooper Tire joins the Atlantic family in 2007, Mazda came on board as an official series partner in '06 and also teamed with Cosworth to provide the 300-horspower Mazda-Cosworth engines that power all Atlantic Swift Engineering-designed chassis.
"It's been a great first year for Mazda as a partner and engine-supplier to the Champ Car Atlantic series," said Robert Davis, Senior Vice President, Product Development and Quality for Mazda North American Operations, and the man responsible for all of Mazda's North American motorsport activity through its MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development arm. "We welcome Cooper Tire into the family, and fully expect they'll quickly see the research-and-development and promotional benefits from their involvement in one of the best open-wheel racing series in the world."
The Champ Car Atlantic Championship continues to be the premier open-wheel development series in North America. Preparing for its 34th season in 2007, the championship is noted for its long history of graduating its stars into Champ Car competition and has helped produce past Champ Car champions Paul Tracy, Jimmy Vasser, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve. 2006 Champ Car competitors Alex Tagliani, Andrew Ranger, Katherine Legge, Tonis Kasemets and 2005 Atlantic champion Charles Zwolsman are established Atlantic graduates along with 2004 Champ Car Rookie of the Year and 2003 Atlantic champ A.J. Allmendinger and 2000 series champion Buddy Rice. Competing in Swift 016.a chassis powered by a 2.3-liter Mazda-Cosworth engine while riding on Cooper Tires, 2007 competitors will fight for the 12-race championship and the unique $2 million Champ Car series champion's bonus.
