SUMMERTON AND EDWARDS MAKE IT ANOTHER 1-2 FINISH FOR NWR AT MOSPORT
Mundelein, IL (August 30, 2009) - Starting on the pole for the 4th time this season, Newman Wachs Racing driver Jonathan Summerton pulled away from the field and scored his 3rd victory of 2009 today in the Atlantic Championship race at Mosport International Raceway. Starting 4th was NWR teammate John Edwards, who made a hard charge to the front, passing Championship leader Simona De Silvestro and Frederic Vervisch to make it the 2nd 1-2 finish for NWR this year.
Summerton led lights to checkered flag and pulled out an early lead over 2nd place. He was able to maintain his position as his teammate fought a three-way battle behind him which prevented any challengers. The talented young American drove a flawless race on his way to capturing the second 1-2 finish for the team and his fifth career Atlantic victory. With only two races remaining in the season, it was crucial to both NWR drivers to finish in front of Championship leader De Silvestro. A yellow flag came out with six laps remaining in the 45 minute race, but went green with just one lap to go. The pair held their positions and both made up valuable points over De Silvestro, who had her first DNF of the year. De Silvestro remains in the lead with 160, then Edwards with 152 and Summerton with 148. Both Summerton and Edwards have finished on the podium seven times this year and both have gained momentum in the closing stages of the 2009 season. With Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca remaining, it is still any of these three drivers' Championship.

"I'm just really excited. Everything that we did today went down really well. I'd just like to thank the team and everybody for all they've done, Cosworth for the engines and Mazda and Cooper, and (team owner) Eddie Wachs for giving me this opportunity. I couldn't ask for anything better. I'm really happy to be up front and winning this race. Simona (De Silvestro) had a bit of bad luck and I think it really helped us in the championship this weekend. John (Edwards) and I finished 1-2, and you couldn't ask for much better. Hopefully, this will continue through the next two races. I know we can do it."
Edwards had to battle his way to the front after a disappointing qualification for the young Cincinnatian. Coming from 4th at a track which is difficult to pass at, he amazingly passed 2nd and 3rd places in the same lap. He also drove brilliantly, and claimed the fastest lap of the race. He earns a valuable extra point for improving the most positions, and is awarded an additional $2,000 for being the hard charger.

"Today was a great race. Unfortunately, I didn't qualify well. I was hoping that we could lock out the front row with Newman Wachs, but Jonathan got pole and I didn't have a great qualifying, so I knew I had to make up for it in the race. In the first few laps, we were running all together and I had a bit of an advantage coming out of (Turn) 5 compared to Simona and Frederic (Vervisch) but Simona was getting Frederic's draft, so I wasn't able to close up on her much. Finally, she made a mistake and I was able to get by her and then just caught Frederic and passed him. After that, it was a bit of a boring race. We were just running lap times. I was pretty similar to Jonathan, a tenth (of a second) quicker some laps, a tenth slower other laps, but all in all, it was a great day for the team. I think we scored the maximum points that a team can score, because I got the Hard Charger even and got that extra point. Jonathan got pole and we got the first two positions for points. It's really a great day. We made up a lot of championship ground and we're looking forward to the next two rounds."
