MONTREAL, Quebec (June 12, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney turned in his strongest effort of the season by moving up from 11th on the grid to finish sixth in today's KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship race at the Grand Prix of Canada.
Pole winner Alexandre Tagliani led all 27 laps for the victory, holding off Buddy Rice on the final lap to the delight of his hometown crowd. Tagliani, who also won the season-opener at Long Beach, beat Rice by 0.41 seconds. Anthony Lazzaro finished third, Kenny Wilden was fourth and Lee Bentham moved up from 14th on the grid to finish fifth.
Gurney's sixth-place performance on the 2.745-mile circuit improved upon his previous best finish, an eighth in his first oval race at Nazareth Speedway. Gurney was the highest-finishing rookie in today's race, allowing him to close on the rookie points leaders. Nicolas Rondet still leads all rookies with 28 points, followed by Jean-Francois Veilleux, 26 and Sam Hornish, Jr., 23. Gurney is fourth with 15 points.
Lazarro continues to lead the overall championship with 85 points, followed by Rice with 58 points. Tagliani, who earned 20 points for the victory, plus a point for pole and another point for leading most laps, now trails Rice by just one point, 58-57.
