Dalziel fastest at Fundidora
Toyota Atlantic Championship points leader Ryan Dalziel guaranteed himself a front-row start for Sunday's Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix at Fundidora Park, Monterrey thanks to another consistent day by the 22-year-old Scottish racer.
With a month between the opening two rounds, Ryan was eager to get back behind the wheel today and resume his title-bid following his Long Beach triumph. The Orlando-based charger, gunning for a seventh consecutive podium finish this weekend, was quickly up to speed in this morning's 30-minute free practice session, leading the field with a hot lap of 1m27.693s, fourth tenths of a second faster than his nearest rival.
Mirroring his Friday performance from last month's outing in California Ryan then piloted the #28 ProWorks Sierra Sierra Enterprises entry to the top of the timesheets in first qualifying with a lap time of 1m25.571s round the 2.1-mile Mexican circuit, collecting a bonus point along the way while guaranteeing a front-row start for the 32-lap race on Sunday.
Dalziel will secure a second successive pole position if no-one improves upon his lap-time in tomorrow afternoon's second and final qualifying session with another bonus point available to the Scot should he continue to frustrate the opposition and set the pace.
Reflecting on a productive day at the office Ryan commented:
"It's been a perfect day! Our car was fast straight off the back of the transporter and we simply fine tuned one or two small elements over the course of the day. I was surprised by the condition of the track in our first session. Usually it's quite green but the level of grip was pretty good right from the start. Qualifying was really a progression of our work form the first session and I banged in my quick laps right at the end. I'll be hoping for more of the same tomorrow!"
Sunday's race, Round 2 of the 12-race Toyota Atlantic Championship Presented by Yokohama, starts at 1:30pm Eastern Time. Further details and live timing can be found on: www.toyotaatlantic.com
