DSTP's Joey Hand finishes third in inaugural Monterrey Atlantic race
Hand charges through field following early race set back
Monterrey, Mexico (March 9, 2002) - DSTP Motorsports' Joey Hand set the stage as a force to contend with in this year's CART Toyota Atlantic Championship by virtue of a solid third place finish in today's first round of the 12-race series in Monterrey, Mexico. Hand, who qualified in the second starting spot, overcame a first lap spin after being hit from behind by another competitor, then steadily moved through the field before contact with the Dorricott Racing car of Alex Gurney slowed his charge. He held on to finish third, marking Hand's fifth consecutive podium finish after claiming a top-three spot in the final four races of 2001.
"DSTP gave me a great race car for the rain, just like in Cleveland last year," said Hand, who won the 2001 Rookie of the Year title with DSTP. "In fact, we had the fastest car for most of the race. I was hit from behind on the first lap and fell back about ten spots, then started charging back through the field. I had a run on Gurney for third place coming out of the turn three-four chicane. He moved outside and I had nowhere to go and clipped his right rear. It sent me flying and bent the front wing, but I still had a good car. We came through to finish on the podium, which is our goal for every race this year. While we really wanted to win, it gives us a good start on the championship for this year."
Dorricott's Jon Fogarty won today's race followed by the Michael Shank Racing entry of series rookie Ryan Dalziel. Hand earned 14 points for today's finish and sits third overall in the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship points standings.
Round two takes place on April 14 in Long Beach, California, at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach CART FedEx Championship weekend.
