FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MICHAEL TODD DAVID STUNG AT TORONTO BY "WRONG PLACE - WRONT TIME"
TORONTO, Ontario, Canada (July 18, 1998) - For Michael Todd David and the PDR-Water Joe Racing team, the 31st of the 39-lap seventh round of the 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship at Toronto's Exhibition Place was a simple case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
David, who started 18th in the PDR/Water Joe Ralt RT-41, was running a solid, error free race enroute to a sure top-15 finish or better when his race was abruptly interrupted. While David was entering the braking zone on the straight-away leading into turn three, Pook locked his brakes on the outside of the straight-away while avoiding nose-to-tail contact with another car. White smoke pouring from Pook's brakes left a noxious smoke bank in the path of on-coming cars. Seeking to avoid the blinding smoke, David veered toward the inside wall but was violently struck on the his left side when Pook's car careened out of control back across the track.
"I was running down the straight-away with Pook and a couple of others in front of me," said David. "One of them was leaking oil which was getting on my shield and restricting my vision. I ran out of tear-aways so I was cleaning my shield with my glove. The next thing I remember, I was blinded by white smoke, I couldn't see through it so I steered to the right for best vision. Pook's car was backwards and spinning across the track. He didn't give me any place to escape when he hit me from the side and pinched me against the wall; that ended my day."
Although he didn't collect any championship points, David is tied for 12th with Derek Hill with 25 points in the Atlantic championship standings.
The next stop for the PDR Enterprises/Water Joe Racing team in the 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship will be the Player's Grand Prix du Trois-Rivieres, Sunday, August 2, in round eight of the 13-race KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship.
The Toronto Atlantic race will be telecast on ESPN2, Sunday, July 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET (10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. PT).
