As we came into the Fountain Turn there was a huge accordion affect with cars ahead braking a little harder than I expected on the opening lap and I just nudged the car ahead of me. Unfortunately that damaged my front wing just enough to require a change. After that, I was able to pass a few cars in the middle part of the race. It's a shame because without the wing change, I might have been able to be closer to the Top-10.
Race Recap: Making Up For Lost Time
(Long Beach, CA) April 15, 2007 -- Canadian Mike Forest was making up for lost time in more ways than one in the second round of the Cooper Tires presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship powered by Mazda at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Last year, Forests season virtually ended before it began when he broke a vertebrae while practicing for last year's race here. Today, Forest made it through the weekend to finish in 18th place, but it was an exercise in gaining lost positions as an opening lap contact, forced an early pitstop to replace a damaged front wing.
Having started 22nd, Forest came into the third turn around the Aquarium fountain and made contact with the car ahead as the field slowed more than expected through the right hand corner. Quick work by the Miracle Sealants/PR-1 Motorsports crew got Forest back in the action without losing a lap as the field was under the control of the pace car.
Forest returned in 23rd place and set to work picking his way past the cars ahead of him. Over the ensuing 14 laps Forest would make his way past four cars and it might have been at least five cars, but the checkered flag flew just a bit too soon to make the next pass.
The series heads to Houston next weekend, which will be Forest's first visit to the Jagflo Speedway at Reliant Arena.
A reminder that Forest's home race, the Grand Prix of Edmonton takes place at City Centre Airport from July 20-22.
