DE SILVESTRO QUALIFIES IN TOP TEN FOR HER DEBUT ATLANTIC RACE
Las Vegas, NV (April 7, 2007)- Walker Racing rookie, Swiss Simona De Silvestro, proved that she was a force to be reckoned with in today's final qualifying session. The 18 year-old blistered the time charts as she clocked a fast lap time of 1:31.327 (96.182 mph) putting her eighth overall on the grid out of the 27 Champ Car Atlantic field. Each lap the rookie took she accelerated her speed, but unfortunately got caught in traffic and a number of red flags, preventing the young Swiss Miss to get a clear lap in. This will mark De Silvestro's first Atlantic race as she speeds through the streets of downtown Las Vegas. The Walker Racing clan will return to the track at 9:45 a.m. PT for a 15- minute warm-up session and then back out again for round one of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship which begins at 4:00 p.m. For more updates on the team please visit www.walkerracing.com <http://www.walkerracing.com/> .
What they had to say....
Simona De Silvestro: "After today's qualifying I feel really confident going into my first Atlantic race with seventh place. We had a good session, but I think we could have done better if it hadn't been for the red flags and the traffic. The guys gave me such a fast car and I was fast, but unfortunately I was only able to get one lap in. Overall I just need to concentrate on the chicane and hopefully I can bring a good result."
Derrick Walker, Walker Racing Owner:"As the Atlantic series gets more competitive and we get more cars out there, running, driving on the limit, the consequences are always a lot of yellows and red flags. So being that Simona has no previous track record and the fact we are pitted down the end of the pits, means we are always the last car out and we get caught in a lot of traffic. We have been dodging traffic all day and Simona really hasn't had a lot of good laps put together, but it really shows that she is coming of age. When it came time for her to do that one lap at the end to get that position, she stepped up and did it, justly earning a seventh place finish. Full marks to the team who put a really good car together right off the truck. It really helped her to concentrate on learning the track. The car was really close from the start, great team effort all around."
