Dalziel Seizes Initiative With Provisional Pole
Ryan Dalziel seized the early initiative in this weekend's title-deciding final round of the 2004 Toyota Atlantic Championship at Laguna Seca, California by placing his #28 ProWorks entry on provisional pole. The 22-year-old Scot set the pace in this afternoon's first qualifying session, lapping the 2.238-mile permanent road course in 1m18.921s, guaranteeing himself a front-row start come Sunday's title showdown and another vital championship point.
Jon Fogarty, current series leader, saw his advantage over Dalziel cut back to just four points, 294-290, heading into tomorrow's second and final qualifying session to set the grid for Round 12. The American had initially set the pace, topping this morning's free practice session a tenth quicker than Dalziel in second.
Dalziel was not to be outdone this afternoon when it mattered most and duly turned the tables on his title rival to grab provisional pole and the extra championship point. Fogarty was dropped to third in the session by Dalziel's Sierra Sierra Enterprises team-mate Andrew Ranger, the Canadian rookie's lap time of 1m19.020s faster than Fogarty by a mere three hundredths of a second.
Commenting after today's efforts Dalziel remarked:
"We had a good day today but there's still more work to be done as we need to ensure we secure pole tomorrow and lock-out the available qualifying points. We're halfway there thanks to my best lap today and from a team perspective it's great to have Andrew right up there. I think every race Jon and I have won this year we've won from pole, we can't underestimate just how important it is to get that position tomorrow and lead the field to the green on Sunday!"
Sunday's 30-lap season finale is scheduled for 10:30am Pacific Time. Live timing from tomorrow's final qualifying session and the race the following day will be available online at www.toyotaatlantic.com
