Post-race driver quotes from Laguna Seca Raceway (Sat., Sept. 6)

#32 ALEX BARRON (Lynx Racing-Victory Circle/Red Line Oil) "It was a pretty exciting race with a lot going on. Anthony Lazzaro ran into the side me at the start and after that the steering was a little crooked but the car handled fine. Then, a few laps into the race my transmission started jumping out of third and I had to drive some of the time with one hand. That was why I spun in turn 11, but I didn't lose a place. I'm sorry my teammate, Memo, had mechanical problems because we were having a great race. I'm very happy for both myself and Lynx Racing to end the season" (Peter Frey)

#19 MEMO GIDLEY (Lynx Racing) "I had a winning car today, but going into the corkscrew, I heard a crunch in the gearbox. I immediately tried the other gears, but it was the same everywhere. The team gave me a great car today and a great rookie season, and in spite of what happened today, I'm one happy race car driver. I'm looking forward to bringing a third title to Lynx in 1998." (Peter Frey)

#35 DAVID POOK (B.D.J.S.-HYPE Energy Drink/Budweiser) "What a great way to finish the season. I'm so happy for my team and for Budweiser HYPE and Long Beach. My radio wasn't working today so I had no idea where I was running"

"I could have pushed a bit harder, but I had a brake problem and just wanted to drive a smart race. After how tough this season has been, we are really happy to finish the year on a good note. This is such a good track for me. My team has worked so hard this season. I'm glad I could do this for them." (Sabina Clemens)

#14 CHUCK WEST (World Speed Motorsports-Seagate/Red Line Oil/Martini Sunglasses/Harvest Group/Uniseal) "We made some pretty radical changes in the setup before the race, and I'm glad my crew chief, Mike Doyle, took the chance. It's not exactly the result we were looking for, but we'll take it. It was good to have all the folks at Seagate Software rooting for us from behind our pit. We've had some long road trips and it's great to finish the season at home in front of friends and family." (Pam Morey)

#66 ALEXANDRE TAGLIANI (Player's Forsythe Racing Team-Player's/Indeck) "This is a wonderful way to end the season. It helps us to forget the troubles we had during the last races. I'm really happy to end the season third in the championship, and this is the doing of the whole Player's team who did a terrific job. At the beginning of the race, I lacked grip but it got better and better as the race progressed. I lacked power in the straights though, and I could not challenge the leaders." (Francois Cartier)

#33 BERTRAND GODIN (Player's Forsythe Racing Team-Player's/Indeck) "In the first laps, somebody touched my left rear wheel, and slashed my tire. It's really disappointing to lose the third position in the Championship due to a flat tire, but as we say, that's racing. Don't forget that I am already looking forward to next season with a sharp appetite for wins." (Francois Cartier)

MIKE DOYLE (Crew chief /engineer for #14 Chuck West-World Speed Motorsports) "I'm not glad the season's over, but we need to regroup. This wasn't the result I wanted, but the car came back in one piece. That was one goal for this weekend. I'd love to start the season over. We've learned so much as a team. I only had one crew member, Chris Moschetto, and he and I had a lot of long nights. The competition in the series is tougher this year, but now, we know our weaknesses. We had sporadic runs of success, but no real continuity. We probably did two seasons worth of work and learning and that will help a lot next year." (Pam Morey)

#96 JERET SCHROEDER (P.P.I.-MCI Racing) "It's definitely been a fun race. I would have liked to end up a lot better than fifth place, but we had a hard time in qualifying which put us 12th on the grid for the start. I just drove a 150 %. I was just sideways all over the track. I got close to Michael David and the car was just too loose to keep up with him, so I had to slow down a bit and run a fairly conservative race in the middle, but I had a good time. I'm definitely looking forward to next season." (Sharon Villanueva)

#3 MICHAEL DAVID (PDR Enterprises-Water Joe/David Engineering and Mfg.) "Right from the start, everything went great. We had an awesome start to the race, and I'd been practicing in the off-season for that. This whole year, we had a lot of bad luck. We started off with a great weekend, then had some problems this morning with a bad battery (low voltage). Through the race, I was on fire! Everything went well. I was making clean passes and running neck and neck with Alex Tagliani for a while. Traffic played a part. Just dicing out, I tried to keep the momentum going while dealing with traffic. About four laps from the end, I was going through some of the corners, and the car sounded like it was running out of gas. I thought to myself 'Oh man!' I saw Alex getting closer and closer and I just couldn't hang onto it. I had to let him go by, but it was pretty exciting still to be up at the front. It will make for a great off-season, and really pick up the spirits for testing."

#59 MICHAEL SIMPSON/C2 Race Winner (Simpson Motorsports-Pick-A-Part/Maaco Autobody) "It was a pretty good race. I don't know what was harder, driving the car or watching out for the guys coming out from behind. It was a real tough field this year. We were a little slow in qualifying. We had lost first gear in Cleveland, and we didn't have enough money to get another first gear, so we rounded off the teeth that were left on first. We had to adjust the car in order to keep the momentum into the corners. We worked that out, and it seemed to come around and we dropped five or six seconds off our qualifying time, which was pretty decent. We were happy with that. We also lost a crankshaft at Cleveland, and we ended up tearing the engine apart and re-building it ourselves in the back yard. Arnie Loyning helped us out with that. And it turned out pretty good. Hopefully we can get a Ralt RT-40 for next year and be out there."

#4 ANTHONY LAZZARO (Phillips Motorsports-Platinum Sound/BG Products/Budget) "I got a good start. Alex (Barron) picked up on the line. I had already chosen the inside, and when I got up there, he started moving over and we made contact. I think he realized he didn't get a good start and wanted to move over to defend his position and I was there."

#10 MARK TAGUE (World Speed Motorsports-Altec/Liaison Software Co.) "That was a lot of fun. There were guys spinning everywhere and stuff was flying all over the place. This was our best finish of the season, and to finish right behind Chuck was great. We had a fuel pick-up problem at the end, but turned laps of 1:21, so we're happy." (Pam Morey)

#29 CASE MONTGOMERY (Binder Racing-Microsoft/Wall Data/Tandem/Compaq) "Well, I'm kind of speechless. The guys did a great job piecing my car back together and really had no idea what it would do going into turn one. But it was great, and I got a good start and got into fourth before the gearbox broke. I guess we're all just lucky to be here at all. I never would hav been here without my friend Dave Cutler, and the backing from our sponsors."
