CHAMPIONSHIP RACING MAGAZINE TO SPONSOR YEAR-END 'GILLES VILLENEUVE AWARD' TO ATLANTIC COMPETITOR

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., July 2, 1999 - The "Gilles Villeneuve Award," presented annually to a KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship competitor at season's end, will be sponsored this year by Championship Racing Magazine. The award, donated and dedicated by 1988 Atlantic Champion Steve Shelton, is named after Atlantic graduate and racing legend, the late Gilles Villeneuve. It is given each year at the season-ending awards banquet to the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship driver "who possesses extraordinary ability and has that special star quality and who has distinguished himself through sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance in the face of disappointment." "Championship Racing Magazine is honored to be associated with the Gilles Villeneuve Award, and its place in the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship," said Ned Wicker, Editor of CRM. "In today's world we often forget that character counts, so it is a privilege for us to participate in the Atlantic family through this presentation." The Gilles Villeneuve Award, instituted 11 years ago, was given to Freddy Rhemrev (1989), Claude Bourbonnais (1990), Jimmy Vasser (1991), David Empringham (1992 and 1995), Trevor Seibert (1993), Colin Trueman (1994), Case Montgomery (1996), Jeret Schroeder (1997), and Buddy Rice (1998).
