DEREK DALY ACADEMY TO SPONSOR JEFF SHAFER IN KOOL/TOYOTA ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP
LAS VEGAS, NV (APRIL 8, 1998) The Derek Daly Performance Driving Academy and Indianapolis businessman Don Gongaware announced today that they will sponsor driver Jeff Shafer of North Hollywood, CA, during select events of the 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship. Shafer, the 1996 Team Green Academy winner, will drive for the PPI/Arciero-Wells team.
The initial schedule includes races at Milwaukee, Toronto, Elkhart Lake, Vancouver, and Houston. Shafer will team with drivers Anthony Lazzaro and Masaoki Nagashima while driving a 1998 Swift 008.a chassis with Yokohama tires powered by Toyota.
"We believe Jeff Shafer has what it takes to be the best," commented Academy owner Daly. "We first saw it when he participated and won the 1996 Team Green Academy, and watched his talent level grow over the last year in the US F2000 series. We are very proud to be part of this effort with Cal Wells and PPI."
"It's a tremendous opportunity for me and I really appreciate the work that everyone, especially Derek and Don, did to put this together and make it all possible," said Shafer, 22. "We have already completed some testing and I am really looking forward to working with the entire PPI/Arciero-Wells team."
Shafer's experience includes the US Formula 2000 series (gaining three poles, three victories and seven top-ten finishes in 1997 in Pro and National competition), the Barber Dodge Pro Series, and the Barber Dodge Western Series. In addition to his duties with the Atlantic team, Shafer will be racing in the 1998 US F2000 series with Hycroft Racing. Already this season, he has scored two top ten finishes at Walt Disney World and Phoenix.
This marks the first time that the Derek Daly Academy (formerly Derek Daly SpeedCentre) has officially sponsored a driver in a series. Shafer's car will carry the new Academy logo on its sidepods and other select areas.
