Another successful test for Yasukawa.
Hylton Motorsports driver Roger Yasukawa, pilot of the #9 Autobacs/u.s. print/Toyota/Swift completed his second and final day of testing at Portland International Raceway on Wednesday.
Yasukawa successfully completed 215 miles on Wednesday and over 450 during the two-day test. After a full day of development work on Tuesday, Yasukawa and his crew spent Wednesday fine-tuning their set-up and they were pleased with their results. "This test has been a big success for us over the two days," said Yasukawa. "We tried and found things that made the car worse and also things that made it better, so we definitely learned a lot. Today we tried different levels of downforce, which really improved the set-up and our lap times. Most importantly we know we have a fast set-up to start with when we return here in June for the race, that was our goal and we achieved it."
Yasukawa made his Atlantic competition debut in Long Beach and had completed just three days of testing prior to that event. He ran well all weekend and finished the race a very impressive seventh, earning nine championship points and placing him 13th in the series standings. Wednesday was Yasukawa's fourth full test day in the Atlantic car and he commented on his confidence in the Swift 014.a, "Portland is a great place for me to test. It is a demanding, difficult track but it is also a fun track to drive and it allows you to really push yourself. Derek (Higgins, driver coach) has been a big asset for me, he is familiar with these tracks and he gives me pointers on my driving but he also pushes me when and where I need it. Derek also has a lot of experience working with the engineers and set-ups, that is not something that we did as much of in Barber Dodge, so he is a terrific example for me to learn from." He continued, "I really look forward to returning here in June. It will be great to come back to a track and a car that I know and am confident in."
Team manager and engineer for the #9 car, Bob Montgomery commented on the test, "Roger continues to adjust to the car very well. He was up to speed and his feedback is terrific. We tried a variety of different things and we've come upon what we think will be a good place to start with for the race. It was a very successful test for us, both cars ran over 400 miles flawlessly, we had perfect weather for testing and the whole crew as usual, did an excellent job."
Yasukawa's test program continues in May, as he and his Hylton Motorsports crew will spend two days at the Milwaukee Mile. It will be the first oval test of the year for Hylton Motorsports and Yasukawa's first time on an oval in an Atlantic car. Round three of the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship will take place at the Milwaukee Mile on June 2nd. The race will be televised live on Speed Channel at 4:00 pm (Est.).
