Houston, TX - As the Atlantic fleet took the streets of Houston today for their final round of qualifying, Buddy Rice found his new track record under attack early on. Andrew Bordin turns in a 66.491sec pass on his sixth lap of the circuit then promptly buries his car in a tire barrier in turn 5. Bordin's time will stand for the entire qualifying round.
This will be the last appearance for the PPI Atlantic team. PPI will be pulling the plug on the program for next year. In post qualifying comments Bordin stated "I would like to do very well for Cal Wells (team owner), Nick Harvey (manager), Kyle Brannon (engineer), and for Micheal Harvey (crew chief), and all the guys on the team. They have all dedicated so much to this program and to Dan and I. We really owe them only the best."
Lynx Racing and David Rutledge secured their position on the outside of row one. "The Lynx team gave me an even better car today than yesterday, and yesterday's was really good. We have a really good car for the race." Rutledge took home a win Montreal, which was the last time he started up front. "We want to end the season on a high note and we've got the car and the team to do it."
After all the smoke cleared, Buddy Rice found himself two steps down from the number one spot he occupied this morning. Half way through the session Rice finds himself sliding into the wall in turn nine. "I was on a clear lap and wanted to put in a flier. I came in [to turn nine] just a little too hot and locked up the front tires. The car's not too bad, just bent the right front corner and wing. We'll be okay tomorrow [for the race]. We're still starting third and should have a good shot at the front."
Martin Basso and Daniel Wheldon round out the fast five. The Atlantics take to the track for their final trip around downtown tomorrow at 9:40am CST. kk
