Promising First Round Atlantic Qualifying For Conquest Racing
Houston, Texas, -- The Conquest Racing Team had an encouraging start in today's first qualifying round in Houston. Italian driver Giacomo Ricci qualified ninth while teammate American driver Matt Lee qualified thirteenth.
Coming off a good team performance in Long Beach, Conquest Racing was looking forward to continuing their momentum in the first round of qualifying in Houston, third round of the Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda. Ricci came into qualifying today after finishing sixth in Long Beach while teammate Lee ended eleventh for the weekend.
During the first few minutes of the session, Ricci climbed into fifth position on the time charts and remained there until the closing minutes of the session. With a red flag coming out near the end of qualifying, Ricci and his fellow competitors only had a couple of laps to improve their times once the green flag flew again. Unfortunately for Ricci was not able to improve on new tires and he was pushed back to ninth place. Lee, however, started off in a lower position running around 21st for the majority of the qualifying session but near the end, running on new tires, he was able to get some solid laps in and jumped up to 13th on the provisional grid.
9th- Giacomo Ricci #18 Mazda-Cosworth/Swift/Cooper
"I was running on old tires and even after we switched to new tires, I was not able to improve my time and dropped from fifth to ninth in the session. I think tomorrow can be better and I will work hard to put in a better lap time in the second round."
13th - Matt Lee #44 Mazda-Cosworth/Swift/Cooper
"I was running on old tires that were lacking grip. When we put new tires on, I only got a few laps before the red flag so when it went green right at the end, I only had two laps to get a solid time. On the last lap, I was able to be really aggressive with the car and the tires had a lot of grip. There's still work to do but I think we will be a lot faster coming into tomorrow's practice."
The second qualifying session will begin tomorrow at 12:15 pm local time after an early morning practice session at 8:45am.
