Madison, IL (September 15, 2000) - With only 6/100 of a second separating the top three starters for tomorrow's CART Toyota Atlantic race at Gateway International Raceway, Buddy Rice and DSTP Atlantic will start third after setting a time of 30.824 seconds (148.326 miles per hour) in today's single-car qualifying session. Earlier today, Rice set the fastest time in this morning's practice session with a time of 30.224 seconds.
"Third is a good qualifying spot for a car that I know is strong in traffic," said Rice, who has won twice after starting from the third spot so far this year. "The temperature cooled off a bit more than we expected and we lost a little grip, but we have an excellent car for the race. I think that the weather and tire wear will play a role tomorrow. Our main goal is to collect as many points as possible and as long as we do our job and win the race, then we'll be in good shape."
Atlantic veteran Case Montgomery took the pole with a time of 30.764 (148.615 miles per hour), followed by Martin Basso (30.822), Rice, Dan Wheldon (30.867) and David Rutledge (30.873).
"We're in a good spot for the start," said Dede Rogers, team owner. "Buddy is great on ovals as well as working through traffic. The car should be strong for the race and the DSTP team is definitely focused on the championship."
Tomorrow's Atlantic activities begin with a 15-minute qualifying session at 8:00 am, followed by the 50-lap race at 3:15 pm. The race will be televised via espn2 on Sunday, September 24 at 6:30 pm (EDT) with an encore presentation on Thursday, September 28 at 5:00 am (EDT).
