11/14/01 Barber Dodge Alumni Dominate Dorricott Short List
Indy Lights Championship winning Dorricott Racing is conducting its annual driver’s search for it’s newly formed assault on the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship. Of the seven drivers on the short list to fill the two vacant seats, all but one is a Barber Dodge Pro Series alumnus.
Leading the charge is 2001 Barber Dodge champion Nicolas Rondet. He was among four drivers who tested at the beginning of this week at Buttonwillow Raceway in California. Joining Rondet were third-place finisher in the 2001 season Matt Plumb and Ryan Hunter-Reay who finished the year fifth overall. In addition, Rock Moran, Jr who won the Atlantic Series season finale at Laguna Seca and who is a veteran of 3 and half Barber Dodge campaigns, vied for one of the seats.
Testing next week at the same track will be Vancouver race-winner Roger Yasukawa. He finished the 2001 Barber Dodge season fourth overall. He will be joined by Alex Gurney. Gurney spent 2001 across the pond battling in the ultra competitive British Formula 3 Championship were he enjoyed multiple Top-10 finishes.
"I regard the Barber Dodge series as one of the top development series in the world for preparing drivers to move up the CART Ladder,” said team owner Bob Dorricott.“ Dorricott Racing will continue to look to Barber Dodge to fill driver positions with the team."
Dorricott won the 2001 Lights title at the hands of Townsend Bell another Barber Dodge alumnus. Bell is expected to move up to the CART FedEx Series in 2002 after a successful debut in the American Memorial 500 in Germany this past September.
2000 Barber Dodge Pro Series runner-up Jon Fogarty will drive on of the three expected Dorricott entries in 2002. Fogarty’s rookie Lights season was stymied by a mid season back injury, but showed impressively nevertheless.
