Joey Hand labored through a tough and frustrating Friday on the streets of Denver. His time of 1:09.199 seconds (85.683 mph) was only good enough for eleventh place in provisional qualifying for Round 11 of the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship.

Heading into the 30-minute session, the DSTP team thought the car would be better than it was in the morning practice when Hand toured the 1.647-mile temporary street course with a time of 1:09.199 seconds (85.683 mph). However, Hand continued to fight the car that was lacking the grip he needed to compete for the provisional pole. A.J. Allmendinger continued on to win the provisional pole with a time of 1:07.653 seconds (87.641 mph).

Although a little dejected with today's performance, the DSTP will buckle in for a long night of work to try and get the yellow and purple DSTP Swift ready for tomorrow's track time. Saturday practice for the Atlantic Championship begins at 9:15 a.m. MST and will be followed by final qualifying later in the day at 3:00 p.m. MST. Hand will be looking to move up the grid and increase his chances for his fourth consecutive top-five finish in Sunday's 10:30 a.m. MST race.

Hand on Friday Qualifying:

"Well, we are struggling. We missed on the setup in a large way and the car is very difficult to drive. My whole goal there was to just keep it out of the fence. I mean every was a battle to keep it off of the wall. We are eleventh quickest and we have to figure out how to make the thing drivable. I know it is going to be another late night for these guys, but I'm sure we will figure out something and maybe have a car for them tomorrow."
