Cosmo In Western Union Speed Team Seat For Road America
Long Island, NY -- After a strong performance at Trois Rivieres, Duesenberg Brothers Racing will once again place Guy Cosmo in the #33 Western Union Speed Team car for the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship race at Road America, August 19, 2001. The late hour decision was based on Cosmos ability to perform in less than ideal conditions. This will be his fourth start in the series. Cosmo has finished in the top-ten in every race that he has entered this season.
"Three Rivers was a very difficult race," said Guy Cosmo. "We did not have the opportunity to test prior to the race. I have already gained a certain comfort level with the car. We are participating in the sanctioned test this Thursday, so I believe we have a better chance to achieve our full potential for the race."
Cosmo finished 10th at Three Rivers in spite of poor handling due to a bent suspension piece. He finished 9th in his first Toyota Atlantic outing at Long Beach and 10th at Montreal.
I had a great start and moved up five positions by turn three, explained Guy. Ten laps into the race when I was challenging for position, the car got loose at the exit of the Arch Turn and I tagged the wall. The Western Union/KC Technical Services car wasnt its happy self then. At that point, I was focused on bringing the car home in one piece with a strong finish.
The Duesenberg Brothers Racing Team expressed their satisfaction with Guys performance.
"At Trois Rivieres, Guy was very much a pleasure to work with," said team owner Keith Duesenberg. "From the sponsors to the crew, everyone enjoyed working with him immensely. Guy did a lot of right things that weekend."
Keith is cautiously optimistic about Cosmos future with the Western Union Speed Team, maintaining that the relationship is on a race-per-race basis.
"We have very high hopes for Guy. He has the potential to do great things. I wouldn't mind having people in the paddock wondering about who this talented young man is."
In 1999, Guy Cosmo distinguished himself as one of the hottest young drivers in the US when he won the US F2000 American Continental Championship, notching five victories in the process. Also that year, he tested in Indy Lights and was selected as a test driver for Dunlop Tires. In 2000, the 23 year-old Long Island based driver spent ten months in Denmark as the Mygale works development driver in the Scandinavian Formula 2000 series. While there, he scored two poles, two wins, and 14 top-five finishes on his way to a second place finish in the talent rich Scandinavian open-wheel series championship.
