Fleming will complete the season in Champ Car Atlantic
Indianapolis, July 17th, 2006. -- American star driver Colin Fleming will join Gelles Racing in the #14 car starting in Edmonton this weekend. The former Red Bull driver spent the past seasons in Europe in top Renault ladder series but elected to come home to Gelles Racing and the Champ Car Atlantic, a team and a series he had been considering for a while. The 22-year old San Diego native will enter the five remaining rounds on the calendar.
"It is so exciting to be racing again in America in the Champ Car Atlantic championship with Gelles Racing, said Fleming in Scottsdale, Arizona. It's a culture shock after three years in Europe but I think I can use the experience and harder driving style in my favor. I have heard only good things about the new Swift car, the championship and the high level of racing this year. Gelles Racing has become one of the best teams in the series and I know we're going to be competitive fairly quickly. I've known the Pecorari family from my karting years and teaming up with Robbie, who just won the last round in Toronto, will make it all the more exciting".
On his years as a Red Bull scholar, he added: "I am grateful for everything that Red Bull has done in my racing career and I have not ruled out the possibility that we might do something together at some point in the future. It has been a great experience."
"I am truly elated to have Colin join our Atlantic effort in Edmonton, said team owner Bob Gelles. In the last five years I have done much scouting in the national karting series and formula support series'; I had noticed this talented driver early and I'm very happy our paths finally cross. He is an awesome talent and a front running driver fresh out of the Top Renault ladder series. He will be a great addition to our Atlantic team; the dynamic duo all-American combination of Fleming and Pecorari on the Gelles squad should be an exciting one to watch of the remaining five rounds of Champ Car Atlantic competition this season."
An impressive racing curriculum
Colin Fleming, now 22, already enjoys a 13-year racing curriculum. He started karting at the age of 9 with his father and rewarded him with 10 IKF Grand National Karting championships, 2 WKA Constructors Cup and a CART Stars of Tomorrow title in 2001.
He switched to open wheel in 2002 with the Skip Barber programs, earning victories, scholarships and Rookie of the Year in the process.
Chosen in the Red Bull Driver Search program in 2004, he went to Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault Germany championships, scooping 4 victories and 15 podiums. He has spent the last year and a half in the Renault World Series, notably with Carlin Motorsports this year.
Next weekend in Edmonton
Gelles Racing will cross the northern border to Edmonton, Alberta early this week for Round 8 of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship -- as part of the second running of the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix.
In 2006, Gelles Racing enters the Champ Car Atlantic Championship with a two-car effort and the Formula BMW USA Championship with six cars. Western Union, BMW of Sterling, USA TODAY and Hebert & LeBleu sponsor the team.
