TRACY TO START FROM THE FRONT ROW AND FRANCHITTI 5TH ON THE GRID
CART FedEx Championship Series - QUALIFYING Round 7 of 20 - Motorola 300
MADISON, Ill., (May 28, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy will start from the front row, while his teammate Dario Franchitti will line-up fifth on the grid for tomorrow's 236-lap Motorola 300 at 2:00 p.m. Central Time. (Live on ABC-TV at 3:00 p.m. ET)
Juan Montoya won the second pole position of his career, circling the 1.27-mile oval at Gateway International Raceway in 25.014 seconds (182.778 mph). Tracy had been on the provisional pole before Montoya bettered his time of 25.094 seconds (182.195 mph). Helio Castro-Neves was third quick with a lap-time of 25.103 seconds (182.130 mph), while Patrick Carpentier was fourth fastest. Franchitti's best lap was 25.197 seconds (181.450 mph).
Tracy's starting position is his best since winning the pole at Milwaukee in 1997. He also started second at Gateway in '97, where he claimed his 13th and most recent victory in the CART FedEx Championship Series.
Of the 27 cars entered in tomorrow's race, the top-25 are separated by less than a second based on qualifying times. At 10:00 a.m., cars will participate in a final warm-up session before taking the green flag at 2:00 p.m. CT.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (2nd with a lap-time of 25.094 seconds / 182.195 mph) "It's a good run for Team KOOL Green, but I'm not surprised with Montoya's time. I felt it was going to take a 24-second lap to take the pole. We made a change to the front roll bar before our hot lap and it made the car push real bad. I'm disappointed because it kind of dialed = it out a little bit and I had a little wiggle on my last warm-up lap. I think we left a fair amount of what this car could do on the table. I'm still very happy to be on the front row. It's been some time since I've started on the front row."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (5th with a lap-time of 25.197 seconds / 181.450 mph) "My qualifying lap was really solid and then I went for it on the second one a little bit too much. I'm reasonably satisfied with my position though. It's a strong effort. We've been very consistent, but we're out here to win poles and to win races. Winning is what it's all about for me and the guys at Team KOOL Green. I think if we're going to win the championship this year, we're going to have to pick it up and win some races. If you look at our position now in the championship compared to where we were last year, I'd say we are much better off."

Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney will start ninth on the grid for tomorrow's 50-lap race at 5:30 p.m. CT. Gurney clocked a lap of 31.128 seconds (146.45 mph) on the 1.27-mile Gateway oval.
Anthony Lazarro, meanwhile, is on the pole for the second consecutive race after posting a lap of 30.321 seconds (150.78 mph). Andrew Bordin will line-up next to Lazarro with the second best time of 30.582 seconds (149.49 mph), while Alex Tagliani was third quick with a lap of 30.747 seconds (148.69 mph).
ALEX GURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (9th with a lap-time of 31.128 seconds)
"You only get two laps, so you've got to make them count. I'm still getting used to the whole oval qualifying procedure and going out on cold tires in the Team KOOL Green car. The main thing was the car felt pretty good. The heat didn't bother me. An oval isn't as physically demanding as a road course. It's really more of a mental strain. It should be a good race with lots of drafting. It will definitely be a fun one to watch for the fans."
