Team Rahal and Walker Racing open doors to Hunter-Reay and Yasukawa in CART Mentor Program.
INDIANAPOLIS (August 8, 2002) - As part of its continuing and expanded CART Mentor Program, Championship Auto Racing Teams is placing Toyota Atlantic drivers Ryan Hunter-Reay and Roger Yasukawa with CART FedEx Championship Series competitors Team Rahal and Walker Racing, respectively, for this weekend's CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Each driver will shadow their team and be involved in team meetings, debriefings and public relations functions. In addition, they will be in pit lane during all Champ Car sessions with headsets and listen to team communications.
Hunter-Reay, driving for Hylton Motorsports, is currently third in the Atlantic point standings, with wins at Laguna Seca, Chicago and Cleveland. He will mentor with Team Rahal and drivers Jimmy Vasser and Michel Jourdain Jr.
Yasukawa, also driving for Hylton Motorsports, is currently ninth in Atlantic point standing, with a win at Milwaukee. Yasukawa, a Japanese-American, will mentor with Walker Racing and its Japanese driver Tora Takagi.
Originally designed as a two driver (series point leader, at-large selection) format, the Mentor Program has been expanded.
"Due to the overwhelming support of the entire Champ Car paddock, we chose to expand this phase of the Mentor Program," commented CART Driver Development Manager Robert Dole. "The fact that so many teams wanted to be involved in the program combined with the great talent level in Atlantics this year, it was a natural decision to expand the program. My thanks to everyone involved for making this program work so smoothly in its first year."
The Mid-Ohio weekend will be mark the end of the first phase of the 2002 Mentor Program. Phase 2 will begin at the Grand Prix of the Americas in Miami, October 4th-6th where the Atlantic and Barber Dodge champions will mentor with selected Champ Car teams. At-large selections from both series will mentor at The 500 Presented by Toyota in Fontana, November 1st - 3rd.
