MONTEREY, Calif., (Sept. 10, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti were 11th and 12th respectively today in provisional qualifying for the Shell 300 at Laguna Seca Raceway. Tracy lapped the 2.238-mile road course in 1:09.357 seconds (116.147 mph), while Franchitti turned in a lap of 1:09.442 seconds (116.022 mph) before he went off course and damaged his car.

Bryan Herta, who won last year's race from the pole, stands on the provisional pole after the first day of qualifying. Herta's quick lap was clocked at 1:08.384 seconds (117.903 mph), 0.404 seconds faster than Tony Kanaan's lap of 1:08.738 seconds (117.210 mph). Map Papis was third quickest with a time of 1:08.914 seconds (116.911 mph).

Cars are back on track for practice tomorrow, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time with final qualifying at 12:45 p.m. Sunday's race will be broadcast live on ESPN at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (9th with a lap-time of 1:09.367 seconds / 116.147 mph)

"The car's just not balanced yet. I've got understeer in the middle of the corners and then snap oversteer coming out. We had the same problem this morning. It was a little better this afternoon. - not enough though, but we 're getting there. It's okay, I have a lot of confidence in the Team KOOL Green engineering staff. We'll sit down to get it figured out and fixed for tomorrow."

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (10th with a lap-time of 1:09.442 seconds / 116.022 mph)

"The car bottomed out in the turn (Turn 5) and I lost steering. Then I caught the curb on the exit. The curb's higher than the underbody on the car, so I basically had no steering at all. I hit the wall on the right and came across the track and hit the wall on the left. I'm all right, but the KOOL car is pretty badly damaged. I'm a little upset; I think a fourth-gear turn should have a little more run-off area than that one probably does. But the car was getting better. We tried something with the car and that was the result of it. It's unfortunate."

PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship - PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING

Team KOOL Green's Jonny Kane was third in provisional qualifying today with a time of 1:17.436 seconds (104.045 mph), just 0.011 seconds behind Guy Smith's provisional pole time. Smith powered his way around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course in 1:17.425 seconds (104.059 mph). He was only 0.006 seconds quicker than Didier Andre, who clocked a time of 1:17.431 seconds (104.051 mph).

JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20: (3rd with a lap-time of 1:17.436 seconds / 104.045 mph)

"Straight away this morning, we were one of the quickest. Practice was going well and we were actually second quickest when we lost a motor. That' s unusual because these engines are pretty reliable. It was quite good that we only dropped to fifth. The Team KOOL Green guys did a rush engine change to make it for qualifying. We just got it done - in only about three hours. I came in after one lap to do a systems check and everything was fine. We then went hard for the pole and I'd say we're right there. We're only about one hundredth of a second off the pace now."

KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship - PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING

Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney was eighth in provisional qualifying today in preparation for Saturday's 30-lap KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship race. Gurney turned a lap of 1:21.822 seconds (98.467 mph).

Anthony Lazzaro won the provisional pole with a time of 1:20.544 seconds (100.01 mph). Lazzaro, the points leader, is aiming for his fifth pole during Saturday's final qualifying, then will set his sights on clinching the drivers' championship with a third-place finish or better at Saturday's race.

Alex Tagliani was second fastest with a provisional time of 1:20.640 seconds (99.908 mph), while Andrew Bordin was third-fastest at 1:20.673 seconds (99.869 mph)

Final qualifying is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. Pacific Time. Saturday's race is set for a 3:30 p.m.

ALEX GURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (8th with a lap-time of 1:21.822 seconds / 98.467 mph)

"The session got cut short by a few red flags. I got a decent lap there at the end. We still have to work on the KOOL car quite a bit. We have a little too much understeer. Also, I had a little problem with the throttle responding off certain corners. Otherwise, it was pretty uneventful. Hopefully, we can keep our position or go a little better tomorrow."
