DSTP Racing's Buddy Rice now has a 10-point lead over PPI Motorsports' rookie Dan Wheldon following the season-opening double-header at Homestead, Fla and the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Rice started on the pole for the first of the two Homestead races, but it was Wheldon who took the victory in the opener, his first ever Atlantic competition. In the second race, Wheldon started on the pole but Rice earned the win.
Wheldon captured the pole for Round 3 at Long Beach, but suffered a gearbox malfunction and dropped out of the lead when Rice, who started third, jumped ahead of front-row starters Wheldon and PPI Motorsports teammate Andrew Bordin at the first turn. Wheldon reclaimed the lead on lap 5 but Rice took over for good on lap 15 and went on to win by 17.774 seconds. Lynx Racing's David Rutledge, of Vancouver, B.C., passed Bordin on the next-to-last lap to finish second. Bordin held on for a third-place finish despite suffering from gearbox problems late in the race.
P-1 Racing's Rocky Moran, Jr. of Coto de Caza, California is fourth in the driver's championship, just three points behind Bordin, after recording three top-10 finishes including a career-high third in the second leg of the Homestead twin bill.
The CART Toyota Atlantic Championship has raced at Milwaukee eight times, first in 1988 and then returning in 1993. The previous Atlantic winners at Milwaukee were: J.O. Cunningham (1988), Claude Bourbonnais (1993), Greg Ray (1994), David Empringham (1995), Anthony Lazzaro (1996), Alex Baron (1997), Memo Gidley (1998) and Lee Bentham (1999).

Last Year: Lee Bentham drove to his first Atlantic victory of the season in an incident-filled affair. Bentham took over the lead from David Rutledge on lap 35 of the 60-lap race and went on to post a 2.785-second victory over runner-up Kenny Wilden. Buddy Rice made a dramatic last-lap pass of top-finishing rookie Nicolas Rondet, to finish third. Points leader Anthony Lazzaro started on the pole but a first-turn incident involving Alex Tagliani and Andrew Bordin alongside Lazzaro took out both Tagliani and Bordin, and forced Lazzaro to pit on lap four. Amazingly, Lazzaro overcame several more pit stop visits and charged through the field to finish fifth.
