. Long Beach polesitter CASE MONTGOMERY, of Salinas, Calif., has won three career Atlantic poles, and all have come in his home state of California. This year's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Atlantic race was his second consecutive pole on the seaside circuit. He also won the pole at the 1995 Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey Atlantic event at Laguna Seca Raceway. . ALEXANDRE TAGLIANI won at Long Beach in an older version Ralt RT-40. The last Atlantic driver to win in a Ralt RT-40 was Anthony Lazzaro in last years race at Milwaukee. . The "baby watch" for MISSY WEST, wife of CHUCK WEST, continues. Missy is due any day for delivery of their first child together, and both mother and father were prepared for a hospital run throughout race weekend at Long Beach in the event the stork decided to stop by. . Congratulations are in order for JOE SPOSATO, of Arcadia, Calif., who successfully completed his 100th career Atlantic race with an 11th-place finish after starting 17th. Sposatos first Atlantic race was in July, 1975, at Mosport Park, Ont., Canada. . ALEXANDRE TAGLIANI earned his biggest career pay check in Atlantic racing by winning $20,000 from the posted purse of $85,000. . Third-place finisher BILL AUBERLEN came away with additional bonus checks besides his $9,000 purse by virtue of winning the KOOL "Move-of-the-Race" Award, and the Yokohama "Now You've Got Control" award, with each award worth $1,000. . ANTHONY LAZZARO improved his lead in the KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship to a seven point margin over his closest challenger, ALEXANDRE TAGLIANI, 36-29. MEMO GIDLEY is 11 points back in third place with 25, followed by JOAO BARBOSAs 24 points. BILL AUBERLEN moved into fifth place with 23 points.

. FRANK ALLER'S of Coquitlam, B.C., won the C2 division with a 13th-place overall finish after starting 27th in the Johnston Engineering-prepared Reynard 93H. . In the C2 Championship, DAN VOSLOO, of Irvine, Calif., scoots to the top of the leader board with 26 points. JOAQUIN DeSOTO and FRANK ALLERS are tied for second place with 21 points. . The late night talk show battles have come to the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship as THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO has become a sponsor for rookie Atlantic driver MARCELO GAFFOGLIO, of Fountain Valley, Calif. Gaffoglio met Leno at a vintage auto race in Monterey, Calif., in 1991 when he was serving as translator for close family friend Juan Manuel Fangio. Gaffoglio is driving a Reynard 93H in the C2 division.
