(DENVER, Colo.) August 31, 2002 -On the strength of his second Toyota Atlantic win of the year, Californian Jon Fogarty, Barber Dodge Pro Series Class of 2000, has won the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship. Additionally, Fogarty claims the Rookie of the Year honors, becoming the first rookie champion since 1997.
Making amends for finishing second in the 2000 Barber Dodge Pro Series, Fogarty needed to win going in to the race to best fellow Barber Dodge alum Michael Valiante. He seized the point on lap 12 and went on to lead the most laps to the checkered flag. Valiante needed to finish second to retain the title lead, but could not find a way past yet another Barber Dodge grad in the form of Alex Gurney. He would eventually finish the race in 12th and the second overall in the series.
"It's nice to win the title and not be runner-up for a change," commented Fogarty referring to two, second place finishes in the Skip Barber Race Series and the one in Barber Dodge. "I was thinking about the 2000 Pro Series a lot actually (he lost the title to Nilton Rossoni in the last race). But coming here I knew I had nothing to lose and everything to gain."
The 2002 Toyota Atlantic season was dominated by Barber Dodge alumni, sealing seven of the first ten spots in the overall rankings including the Top-3.
Barber Dodge drivers won 10 of the 12 races run this season with Fogarty taking two, Valiante and Ryan Hunter-Reay three each and Roger Yasukawa and Rocky Moran, Jr one each.
