This is the hardest pole we’ve had all season,” Allmendinger said. “We had really been struggling until today. My crew did a great job. We put on new tires near the end and I thought there was no chance to catch Ryan (Dalziel). But I held my breath the last three laps and I finally pulled one out.”

Dalziel had to settle for the second, his best qualifying effort since winning the pole at Portland in June.

Michael Valiante, the runner-up in the championship, qualified third. “My car was pretty good, I just didn’t get a good lap in today,” he said after recording his seventh consecutive top-four qualifying effort of the year.

Jon Fogarty and Danica Patrick rounded out the top-five.

Tomorrow’s 55-lap race will take the green flag at 10:30 Sunday morning.
