The FORTEC Motorsport F3 Racing Team of Great Britain has signed Alex Gurney
to be their rookie driver to contest the British F3 Championship 2001. Alongside Alex will be Gianmaria Bruni from Italy who returns for a second season with Fortec; he finished 5th last year in the Championship. The Fortec Motorsport Team has been contesting the Series since 1992, claiming CART stars Andre Ribeiro, Gualter Salles, Guy Smith and Juan Pablo Montoya among their graduates. The team is located in Daventry, 2 hours north of London. Alex is not the only new addition to the team. Fortec will be running the new Sodemo Renault engine for the first time, switching from Mugen-Honda, chassis built by Dallara.
The highly competitive British F3 series comprises 13-race events (doubleheaders each, making it 26 sprint races) run on the classic twisty road courses like Snetteron and Oulton Park across the British Isles. One race will be held as a support race to the British Grand Prix in Silverstone. The Series also ventures out to Zandvoort in Holland, and ends with two invitational events in Macau and Korea in November. British F3 is considered one of the best stepping stones to Formula I, attracting a vast cross section of the best young hotshoes from all over the world. Cars are similar in feel and power to the Atlantic cars in the U.S. Anywhere from 30 to 40 machines are expected to contest this year's Championship, (the predominant chassis being Dallara) equipped with 2 liter engines from Sodemo Renault, Mugen Honda, and Opel.
Fortec Team Manager David Hayle:
We are very excited at the prospect of working with Renault and Sodemo for 2001. Gimmi Bruni is staying with the team for this season, which is fantastic, we think he will be able to push for race wins and the title. Alongside him will be American Alex Gurney. Alex is new to Europe and F3, but after an impressive test with him, (at Pembrey, Wales, in December) we feel he will learn the formula and the English tracks quickly and push hard for podiums.
Alex GurneyI am thrilled to be driving for the Fortec Team in the 2001 British F 3 Championship. Jenson Button, along with many others before him, has shown that British F 3 is probably the best school for future F 1 drivers. I know that with F 1 as my goal, this is the place to be. I am ready and anxious for the challenge and grateful for the opportunity. I plan to be moving to England within a week to get ready for an extensive testing schedule starting in mid - February.
I am sure success will require a very focused and complete effort from Alex, but I believe he can get the job done.
