HIGHLAND PARK, Illinois, October 4, 2000 - Buddy Rice, the 2000 CART Toyota Atlantic Champion and rookie Daniel Wheldon were among those honored at the year-end awards banquet that celebrated the 27th season of the development series.

CART interim President & CEO, Bobby Rahal was on hand as the series honored its best and brightest following the season finale at Houston on Sunday.

The awards recipients included:

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: To Daniel Wheldon of PPI Motorsports, in recognition of the rookie scoring the most series championship points, along with $5,000.

GILLES VILLENEUVE AWARD: To Andrew Bordin of PPI Motorsports, sponsored by Championship Racing Magazine awarded to the driver who possesses extraordinary ability and that special "star" quality and who has distinguished himself through sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance in the face of disappointment.

WORLDCOM FAST PACE AWARD: To Buddy Rice of DSTP Motorsports for recording the most laps led throughout the season. Rice led a total of 222 race laps of the 422 run this season.

LINCOLN ELECTRIC MECHANIC OF THE YEAR: To Rick Hayes of World Speed Motorsports, honoring the driver's most important ally during a race weekend.

TEAM OWNER OF THE YEAR: To Peggy Haas and Jackie Doty of Lynx Racing, recognizing the team owner whose interests and efforts benefited the entire series as much as their individual team.

BBS RISING STAR AWARD: To Martin Basso of Michael Shank Racing, sponsored by BBS of America, Inc. honoring a new driver who has come on to the Atlantic scene and performed in a most-competitive fashion and is a star of the future along with $3,500.

MICHAEL ROSEN TROPHY: To Rocky Moran Jr., of P-1 Racing, recognizing dedication and perseverance, as well as the desire to succeed. Moran was the only Atlantic driver in 2000 to complete every single race lap.

TRD ENGINE BUILDER OF THE YEAR: To Paul Hasselgren, recognizing the engine-builder that scores the most championship points.

ENGINEER OF THE YEAR: To Nick Harvey of PPI Motorsports, in recognition of the driver's engineer who best utilizes his knowledge of today's technology as it relates to the car's set-up.

SNAP-ON/CAM TOP WRENCH AWARD: To Marc Armstrong and Jason Robb of DSTP Motorsports to the men in charge of blending all the different elements that combine to make a championship team.

PPG COLOR AND DESIGN AWARD: To DSTP Motorsports, who racecar was judged by the fans as possessing the best graphic design.

JOVY MARCELO SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD: To David Cutler of P-1 Racing, given to the driver whose sportsmanship exemplifies one of the series finest champions.

TOP-10 DRIVERS: Competitors finishing in the top 10 in the final championship points were honored, with Mike Conte of Lynx Racing placing 10th, William Langhorne of Active Motorsports finishing 9th, Alex Gurney of All American Racers, finishing 8th, Hoover Orsi of Hylton Motorsports, finishing 7th, David Rutledge of Lynx Racing finishing 6th, Rocky Moran Jr. of P-1 Racing finishing 5th, Martin Basso of Michael Shank Racing finishing 4th, Andrew Bordin of PPI Motorsports finishing 3rd and earning a $10,000 bonus, Daniel Wheldon of PPI Motorsports finishing 2nd and earning a $15,000 bonus, and the 2000 series champion, Buddy Rice of DSTP Motorsports. Rice's awards also include the $25,000 Driver's Championship bonus, the use of a new Toyota for one year and a painting by Jim Swintal, commissioned by Toyota Motor Sales USA. The painting depicts the DSTP car as it blasts out of Turn 1 with the Cleveland skyline in the background. Rice felt that his season had turned around with his win this year in Cleveland.

Buddy Rice also made a presentation to CART Toyota Atlantic President and CEO, Vicki O'Connor. A checkered flag, signed by each Atlantic driver, was offered in thanks for O'Connor's work on behalf of the development series.
