Major support for Howard at Winchester
Winchester, IN (August 26, 2003) --Winchester Speedway is an important race track to 18-year-old Shelby Howard. Heading to the high banked, half-mile for Saturday's ARCA RE/MAX 200 means several things to the Greenwood, Indiana resident. Fast. Exciting. Familiar. Fans. Homecoming. Lots of fun.
Combine all of those and it can only mean one thing. A win come Saturday would be huge to Howard.
"I love racing at Winchester," said Howard. "It is probably my favorite short track, maybe my favorite track on the whole circuit. A big reason for that is the fact that I have so many laps under my belt here. I've been racing here for a number of years and have always enjoyed this place. It's close to home so a lot of family and friends always come down to watch the race. I appreciate their support and hope we can pull the Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge into victory lane this weekend. It would mean a lot to me and our whole team."
Not only will Howard have family and friends in attendance, but he's expecting nearly 300 guests for a sponsor hospitality event. Beck Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Shepherd Insurance, Celadon Trucking, Stout's RV Sales, and MacDougall Pierce Construction will all be represented. "Having so many people come out this weekend says a lot about those who have backed us this season," Howard said. "Several of them have stuck by us not just this year, but for the past several years. They've all become good friends of ours and are quality people. We want them to have a good time and hope to see them in victory lane."
In last year's event, Howard mounted a serious challenge before reluctantly settling for runner-up to race winner Frank Kimmel. Prior to that race, Howard had only one other top five finish, six top tens, and was 6th in points after 16 starts. This year, going into Winchester, he has two wins, eight top fives, nine top tens, and is 5th in points after 15 starts.
"We would like to be higher in the points, but there's tons of racing left," stated Howard. "We have to zero in on each individual race as if it were the last race of the season. We'll all tighten our belts and keep digging every inch of the way. You can write this down -- we'll give it everything we've got until we see the checkered flag at Lowe's."
The Winchester ARCA RE/MAX 200 will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel at 8 p.m. EDT on Saturday, August 30 and will re-air at 1 a.m. later that evening.
