Toledo, Ohio, 9-17-00 - Findlay, Ohio's Jason Fuller fought off a fast field of ARCA/UMARA Midgets and led all the way to win the 30 lap main event Sunday afternoon at Toledo Speedway.
Fuller, in a new Hawk concept superspeedway car, continually turned back assertive charges from AJ Davis and Jimmy McCune before eventually pulling ahead by 10 lengths at the final stripe to earn his career-first ARCA Auto Value Midget Series victory.
"It's a brand new car; we just finished it last night about 9:30," said the ecstatic winner in victory lane. "And we didn't get any hot laps on it this morning because we were still working on it. I'd like to thank Mike Streicher for getting this thing together in time. It's his new superspeedway Hawk design, and it was a rocket right from the start. I didn't know where they were at times, and I saw AJ's (Davis) and Jimmy's (McCune) nose once or twice but we just held our line and never made a mistake. I'd also like to thank Suspension Spring, AFCO and Hoosier for a great tire. I always wanted to win here at Toledo, and it feels great."
Fuller, who started on the pole, had to first fight off pressure from McCune who raced inches away in the early going before Davis, who won the Hoosier Tire Pole Award earlier, mounted his charge. Davis, who was subbing for the ill Rick Harrell in the Kayo Lumber-Dove Racing Hawk, maneuvered past McCune for second and began working on the leader while Gene Lee Gibson, with Aaron Pollack in tow, raced McCune for third. With the leaders in lapped traffic, McCune and Gibson got by Davis for second and third respectively while Fuller began pulling ahead. But with McCune's hands completely tied fending off Gibson and Davis in the late going, Fuller charged ahead with relentless determination and was never seriously challenged from that point on.
McCune, in the Bisbee Travel Brayton, held on for second in front of Gibson, Davis and Pollack to complete the top-five finishers. Tony Aue raced home in sixth ahead of JD Turner, Brandon Hartsell, Nick Fox and Gary Harrell to complete the top-10. Heat victories were won by Davis, Pollack and Chris Randolph. Dave Baumgartner won the B-main.
The ARCA Auto Value Midget Series will wrap up its 2000 season at Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan on Saturday, September 30.
