History-making Howard hunting for another win.
Toledo, OH (April 30, 2003) -- Shelby Howard, the youngest driver to ever win an ARCA RE/MAX Series event, has reason to believe he can add another trophy to his mantle before the end of the year. He may even pull it off this weekend at Toledo Speedway. The odds are against him, but Howard is still optimistic, especially after last Sunday's record-setting performance at Salem Speedway. Winston Cup veteran Ken Schrader, short track ace Fred Campbell, along with the usual challengers like Frank Kimmel and Jason Jarrett will have to be fought off first.
"We are taking the same car we won with last week at Salem," said Howard. "We'll adjust to fit Toledo's characteristics, but we should be strong. The competition is even stiffer this week, but that's what makes it exciting. I just have to step it up that much more."
Howard and crew had a hard time getting their car to turn in the corners here last June. Contact with the wall late in the race hurt his chances at a top five finish, but he still managed to finish 11th.
"We ran pretty well here last year, so we know what to expect," said Howard. "The racing is tight, but a lot of fun. We enjoy coming to Toledo. Most likely we'll all be chasing (Ken) Schrader on Sunday, but that will make it even more challenging. Just having the #64 Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge take the checkered (flag) in front of the #99 (Schrader) would be a huge feat.
"That's one of the things that makes the ARCA RE/MAX Series so great," continued Howard. "There is a lot of variety in the series. The tracks, the competition, it is all tough. It allows you to learn and see how you are progressing. It really is a fantastic series to be involved in."
Howard and the Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge team will have to bring their best game this Sunday (May 4) for the GFS Marketplace 200 Presented by Federated Car Care. The race starts at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. The race will be broadcast the following Sunday at 4 p.m. on the Outdoor Channel.
