Todd Bowsher Wins Speed51's ARCA Most Popular Driver Award
Fan Favorite Received Nearly 28 Percent of the Total Votes
CONCORD, NC (December 14, 2004) -- Sometimes, it is the smallest things that can bring the most joy. Winning the ARCA National Championship would be huge for any driver, but during the 2004 ARCA Series Banquet Saturday night, winning one of the auxiliary awards proved to be nearly as emotional.
Ohio's Todd Bowsher was named as the ARCA Re/Max Series Most Popular Driver presented by Speed51.com. Bowsher finished ninth in the ARCA point standings, but the Most Popular Driver Award, which was voted on by thousands of fans, more than made his year.
"It is an unbelievable feeling," said Bowsher of winning the inaugural award in the series. "To think that I've got enough people out there that think of me as one of their favorite drivers of ARCA, compared to the likes of Frank Kimmel, Jason Jarrett, Ryan Hemphill and others, is awesome. To be put in front of those guys as far as popularity goes is beyond my imagination.
"It is an honor. It is something that I'll always cherish. It is, by far in my years of driving, the most memorable thing to happen to me. When I heard my name called along with the words 'most popular driver,' it gave me chills. It is a feeling I'll have the rest of my life. I told Bob (Dillner) back in Nashville (TN) that if I couldn't win races or the championship, there is nothing more that I'd want to win than the Most Popular Driver Award.
Bowsher received more than 28 percent of the votes that were tallied on the Speed51.com website. A total of 17 drivers were eligible for the award.
"I always talk about the three Fs in my life that drive me," continued Bowsher. "Those are my friends, my family and my fans. Those are the three things that fuel me. They fuel me to work harder and go the extra distance. I couldn't race without them for a fact and I'm sure I couldn't have won this award without them too."
Bob Dillner made the presentation at the annual awards banquet on Saturday night via videotape due to the fact that the speed51.com crew was covering the Snowball Derby in Pensacola, FL. Bob's colleague at SPEED Channel, Pete Richards, handed out the award.
"I can't be happier about Todd winning the Most Popular driver award," said Dillner, editor of Speed51.com and "Play-by-Play" commentator for SPEED Channel's ARCA coverage in 2004. "I mean, we don't decide the award, the fans do; but I was pulling for a guy like Todd to win all year. The Bowshers are a great family, arguably one of the greatest ever in stock car history, and Todd is a real genuine person. We sat down and spoke many times throughout this year and I feel proud to be able to say Todd is a friend of mine."
The honor netted Bowsher a $1,000 cash prize and a custom-made trophy from Speed51.com, as well as a website design from 51 Sports (the parent company of speed51.com). Total value of the winning prize package presented by Speed51.com is approximately $7,500.
Bowsher, whose best finishes of the year were a pair of seventh-place runs at Kentucky Speedway in May and Pocono Raceway in July, beat out perennial favorites Mark Gibson and Frank Kimmel. Darrell Basham and Jason Jarrett rounded out the top-five vote getters for the award.
"Speed51.com is thrilled to have been able to create and award such an honor in ARCA-town," continued Dillner. "And we hope to continue the tradition for many more years to come. ARCA is one of the premier racing series in the country and they have some pretty great people. Of course everyone knows Frank Kimmel, but guys like Mark Gibson, Darrell Basham and Mike Buckley are just as important. We can't wait for Daytona to roll around."
