TODD BOWSHER TO HONOR FATHER AND RACING LEGEND JACK BOWSHER ON FATHER'S DAY WEEKEND AT MIS
DRIVER'S NO. 21 GFS MARKETPLACE FORD TO DEPICT FATHER'S 1966 CAR
BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 15, 2006) -- When ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Todd Bowsher passes the green flag to start the Hantz Group 200 on June 16 at Michigan International Speedway, he'll have his usual large contingent of family and friends, affectionately named the Bowsher Backers, cheering and supporting him as always.
Unfortunately, one very important Bowsher Backer will be missing this Father's Day weekend.
Jack Bowsher, Todd's father and the namesake of the Jack Bowsher & Associates Motorsports team, unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack on April 8, 2006. As a tribute to his late father, Todd's No. 21 GFS Marketplace Ford will carry a retro paint
scheme depicting the elder Bowsher's 1966 Daytona ARCA 200 championship car.
"We've taken one of our brand new Ford Fusions and turned it into the old paint scheme of the Ford Fairlane that my dad ran when he won the ARCA 200 in 1966 at Daytona. We have it about as authentic as it gets: the number, the colors, all of Dad's sponsors," said Todd Bowsher.
During his illustrious racing career as a driver and owner that spanned six decades, Jack Bowsher won three consecutive championships as a driver from 1963 to 1965 in ARCA's predecessor, the Midwest Association of Race Cars (MARC), and six MARC and ARCA RE/MAX Series championships as an owner. With each milestone achieved, Bowsher further cemented his legacy as a racing legend.
"We want to capture that my dad was not only a founding father, but also a mainstay in ARCA. My whole family, and especially my dad, was involved in ARCA for well over 50 years and we're all very proud of that. If there was anyone who exemplified ARCA better than Jack Bowsher, I don't know them," Bowsher said.
So far in the 2006 season of the ARCA RE/MAX Series, Todd Bowsher has made seven starts with high finishes of 11th, which he charted at Winchester Speedway in May and Pocono last Saturday. His MIS history includes seven starts dating back to June 2001, the highlight being a 13th place finish in June 2003. As Bowsher comes to MIS for the sixth consecutive season, he hopes to improve on that history not only for his own racing records, but to honor the man who showed him how to steer.
"He basically made a living in racing. If you look up the word racer in the dictionary, you really should be able to see his picture. Racing was always the way he put bread on the table," said Bowsher.
Bowsher, who not only works for GFS on race days as the driver of the No. 21 Ford but also as a receiving supervisor at the company's Springfield, Ohio distribution center, would love nothing more than to take the checkered flag at MIS on Father's Day weekend. Approximately 200 miles separate Springfield and MIS, and it's for that reason that Bowsher considers MIS a "home track."
"I like Michigan because it's more than just a one-groove track. You can literally search that whole surface and find two, three, or even four grooves to drive in around the whole track," said Bowsher.
"We really do seem to get a lot of the Bowsher Backers up there in the stands at Michigan. It truly seems that the name is known up there in the southern parts of Michigan, and it's been that way since my brother Bobby raced there and since 2001 when I started racing there."
Perhaps it's just a coincidence that the Father's Day race is close to home this year for Todd Bowsher, or perhaps it's for a totally different reason altogether.
