Steele Enters Berlin: Plenty of Michigan Flavor for Half Mile ARCA RE/MAX Series Thriller
TOLEDO OH (7-10-06)--With 41 career ARCA RE/MAX Series victories, Tim Steele is fourth on the all-time race winner list. But for a veteran driver as competitive as Steele, that's just not good enough.
The Michigan native has entered the July 15th Sara Lee/GFS Marketplace 200 with hopes of adding to his win column in the 54-year-old nationally touring series.
Last year, Steele finished a solid third at Berlin after a late race, fender rubbing battle with seven-time and defending series champion Frank Kimmel. Kimmel, who settled for fourth in the event, has entered the 2006 edition as well. Kimmel is a three-time Berlin race winner, while Steele has two career victories at the tight, .4-mile oval.
But Steele is not the only Michigander to find victory lane at Berlin. Fred Campbell and Bob Keselowski are among the former ARCA RE/MAX Series winners there.
This year, a large crop of Michigan drivers are hoping to find victory lane at Berlin. Among them, Algonac's Billy Leslie, Kalamazoo's Jim Hollenbeck, Belleville's Brad Smith, Clinton's Jason Hedlesky, Clarkston's Michael Simko and Lansing's Gary Sherman. Sherman finished a career best fifth in last year's event.
Add into the mix short track veterans such as Billy Venturini, Bobby Gerhart, Justin Allgaier, Dexter Bean and Blake Bjorklund, and this year's Berlin race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet.
ARCA RE/MAX Series teams begin converging at Berlin at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 15 for registration and hauler parking. The garage area also opens at 10:00 am. Cars take to the track from 2:00-3:30 pm for a practice session, followed by Pork Pole Qualifying at 5:00 pm. The Sara Lee/GFS Marketplace 200 rolls off at 8:30 pm on Saturday, July 15, 2006.
Berlin Raceway is located five miles west of Grand Rapids on Interstate 96, exit 23. Then, go .3-mile south on 16th Avenue, then west to the Berlin Fairgrounds. Tickets are available by calling Berlin Raceway at (616) 677-5000.
