Rookie Caps Off Season With Another Top 5
October 4, 2004 (Talladega, Alabama) - The dream season for ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Ryan Hemphill came to a magical conclusion on Saturday at the legendary Talladega Superspeedway. The 22-year-old driver steered his #64 TRIMSPA DODGE to a 4th place finish in the season ending running of the Food World 300 at the 2.66-mile layout.
"We had a really strong car out there today," stated Hemphill. "The Braun Racing team worked extremely hard on repairing and fine-tuning this DODGE since Daytona. We definitely made it better and I felt like we had a solid chance of winning out there. I just needed a drafting partner and I was never really able to get that. I am very proud of this TRIMSPA team and all that we have accomplished in just 13 races this year."
Ryan and his #64 TRIMSPA DODGE qualified eighth for the 300 mile event but would start from the rear of the field on race day as a result of an engine change. The qualifying effort led to overheating of the Ernie Elliott power plant and the decision was made to replace the engine for the race as a safety precaution. The engine change on Friday morning overlapped into the Happy Hour session and resulted in only 20 minutes of track time for Hemphill and his TRIMSPA DODGE.
The beginning of the 113 lap event saw Hemphill and his #64 TRIMSPA DODGE show their strength and charge through the field and towards the front. This would become a common theme for the day as Ryan would come from the back to the front on three separate occasions. The second time came after a long pit stop to repair the fuel vent hose and the final time came with another long trip down pit road to fix the driver's radio after he lost communication with his team.
The third and final charge to the front had Hemphill in a good position to collect his seventh win of the 2004 season. However, the lack of a dancing partner in the final stages prevented that from happening and relegated the TRIMSPA team to the fourth place finish.
The finish was the tenth top 10 finish of the season in only 14 starts for Hemphill. It also capped off an incredible season that included six wins, six poles and two track records.
"That was a good time out there," said Ryan. "We passed a lot of cars and I wish we could have gotten someone to go with us as I think we would have won this thing. The guys at Ernie Elliott engines gave us great horsepower this week - just as they have all year long. I want to thank the guys on my team for once again working their tails off and making this TRIMSPA DODGE strong out there on the track. I have really enjoyed this year in the ARCA RE/MAX Series and maybe we can come back and run again with them sometime."
