STEVE WALLACE SHINES IN MICHIGAN ARCA TESTING
-17 Year Old Impresses All in Preparations for Speedway Debut-
BROOKLYN, MI (August 5, 2005)--NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace knew that his son Stephen had talent behind the wheel, but even the elder Wallace was surprised at the results of his son's recent test at Michigan International Speedway. Steve, along with his father and a crew composed of Penske Racing South and RWI Racing team members, tested at MIS Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming ARCA RE/MAX Series event there.
The testing format consisted of a series of runs in which the younger Wallace attempted to match lap times set by his father. Driving a Penske Racing South-prepared #27 Kodak Dodge, Steve ended the day with a fast lap of 39.16 seconds (183.816 MPH) in qualifying trim. This time eclipsed his father's 39.48-second lap by nearly three tenths of a second. The performance left everyone involved feeling quite optimistic about their chances in the upcoming race.
RUSTY WALLACE ON WEDNESDAY'S TEST:
"Steve was about two tenths of a second off of the times I was laying down in race trim when we started. As the day went on, we adjusted on the car and Steve's times got closer and closer to mine. By the third run, he was just as fast as I was. At the end of the day, we decided to make a mock qualifying run to see where we stacked up. The car drove pretty well and I ran 39.48 (seconds, 182.371 MPH). Then we put Steve in the car and he went out and ran a 39.16 (seconds, 183.816 MPH). When we told him that, he couldn't believe it; he thought we were lying. Seriously though, we're leaving here feeling extremely excited and confident about our chances. The big thing for Steve is just to get seat time. Hopefully he'll be able to run all of the laps and if everything goes right, be in position for a great finish at the end."
STEVE WALLACE ON WEDNESDAY'S TEST:
"This race track is definitely the fastest I've been on. For as fast as it is though, you don't really feel the speed a lot. I tried to concentrate on hitting my marks and taking in all of the advice everyone was giving me. I'm doing everything I can to learn and gain respect from everyone here. I'm really grateful to Penske Racing for giving me the opportunity to run this race. They've given me great equipment and great people with which to work. That's all a driver can ask for. Hopefully, we'll be able to put it all together and have a great run on race day."
