Phase 1 Construction Project Continues at Salem Salem Speedway owner Owen Thompson has been very busy at track with phase one of a major transformation project underway at the historic southern Indiana oval. The infield scoring tower that once stood front and center has already been removed to make way for a new short track being constructed inside the half-mile oval. Phase one of the project will focus on the addition of a 3/8-mile asphalt oval in the infield of the existing .555-mile track. The new short-track will be configured for oval and figure-8 racing as well as road course racing. A new scoring tower has already been completed, which is situated up on the top floor of the frontstretch super structure (spotter location). Despite the new construction, Speedway officials insist that the historic high-banked, half-mile oval will continue to be the centerpiece of racing at Salem. Phase two of the project, scheduled for 2011, includes improvements to the existing .555-mile oval and construction of a .44-mile dirt track.
