Bill Elliott Returns to 'The Rock'
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (December 17, 2008) -- It has been over 30 years since Bill Elliott made his debut in the Carolina 500 at the Rockingham Speedway in 1976 in what is now known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
The three time race-winner at Rockingham was back with his own car and driver from his own driver development program. Elliott was behind the wheel of his own ARCA car early in the test session to get a base line set up and then assumed the role of driver coach for Casey Roderick the 16 year old phenomenon who was getting his first laps on a superspeedway.
"There are certain things you ain't going to be able to teach them [young drivers], they are going to come up with their own habits of how they drive," said Elliott, the 1988 Champion.
"If you just give them the fundamentals and somehow they figure out better ways of doing it than you anyways. Right now it is just, here are the tools, we will go out and run it, it seems to be okay and go out and learn."
Roderick is hoping to come back next spring and race in the Carolina 200 ARCA RE/MAX Series race on April 19th, 2009 as well as the season ending ARCA race on October 11th, 2009.
