DAYTONA BEACH, FL. (Feb. 3, 2000) - In 1979, a young driver with a famous father won the season-opening ARCA ReMax Series event at Daytona International Speedway. On that day, Kyle Petty scored his first-ever big track win as his father, Richard Petty, watched approvingly.

"Winning at Daytona would be a great way to start the season," stated the 20-year-old Hendrick. "Kyle won in his first start there, maybe we can too. I expect to run up front with a few other guys. We are coming in with a great crew and superior equipment. It will be up to make to make this thing happen and win the race. I'm ready."
Hendrick, who will tackle the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series full-time this season, will be making his initial stock car appearance at Daytona. Hendrick's No. 17 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a former Jerry Nadeau Winston Cup mount. Tony Furr, who already has a Daytona Winston Cup win under his belt guiding John Andretti to Victory Lane in the 1997 Pepsi 400, will serve as Hendrick's crew chief for the event.
Hendrick will also have 1985 Pepsi 400 winner Greg Sacks in his pit to assist with raceday strategy. Under Sacks' watchful eye, Hendrick consistently ran with the fastest cars in pre-season testing on the 2.5-mile Daytona oval.
"Having the kind of quality team I have as well as the assistance of Tony and Greg would be a great benefit to any driver," said Hendrick, who ran the fastest single-lap speed in Daytona Craftsman Truck Series practice two weeks ago. "It's really beneficial to me because I'm a Daytona rookie. They say Daytona is all about having a great car and I know my GMAC Chevy Monte Carlo will be all of that. Adding a great team to it might be enough to get us a top finish and maybe even a trip to Victory Lane too."
The Discount Auto Parts 200 will take the green flag at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, Sunday, February 11. The event will be telecast live on ESPN.
