McGilton Returns to Pocono Confident with Strong Car and Veteran Crew Chief
Long Pond, Pa. (August 1, 2007) -- Phillip McGilton returns with the ARCA RE/MAX Series to Pocono Raceway this weekend for the Pennsylvania 200. McGilton and his Brewco Motorsports teammates are looking forward to getting back on the two-and-a-half mile track where McGilton previously demonstrated veteran-like passing skills. This visit they are packing one additional weapon; veteran Crew Chief, Shawn Parker.
Parker, who is also the Competition Director at Brewco Motorsports, brings 20 years of racing experience and has worked with such greats as Dale Jarrett, Kurt Busch, and Mark Martin.
"I'm excited to get back to Pocono," said Crew Chief Shawn Parker. "It's been 2-3 years for me and it's always a fun place. A good handling car can make for a fun race and the car we are bringing is the one we had here before. It's strong."
The previous visit to the triangular track resulted in a 19th-place finish that did not reflect the strength of the car and its driver. McGilton drove from the back of the pack to the front on multiple occasions. After McGilton qualified his No. 47 SI Performance Ford Fusion in the 20th position, the team was forced to start in the back due to necessary repairs made to the car during the impound. During McGilton's first charge to the front, a blown tire would send the No. 47 to the pits. McGilton returned to the track and charged to take the lead, only to have to pit under the green flag with yet another blown tire.
"I'm looking forward to going to Pocono again," said McGilton. "We had a strong car here in the spring but a few gremlins kept us from getting the finish it deserved. It's a fun track -- big and fast. And we get to shift there which adds some excitement."
Ready to rebound from their only DNF this season, McGilton and the Brewco Motorsports team enter this weekend 6th in the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship points with 2530 points and second in the ARCA Rookie of the Year standings behind Michael McDowell.
"We've had a little tough luck the last couple of races," added driver McGilton. "But we're just over halfway through the season and looking to a strong second half. The points are tight up front. There's not going to be a lot of give and take from here out."
ARCA RE/MAX practice begins Friday morning from 10:15 a.m.-11:55 p.m., with SIM Factory Pole Qualifying taking place at 1:45 p.m. The green flag for the Pennsylvania ARCA 200 at the Pocono Raceway drops at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2007 and will be broadcast LIVE on SPEED. All times are EASTERN.
