Rookie Bozell Solid In ARCA Testing At MIS

Kalamazoo, Michigan - - ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie Phil Bozell punched out some promising lap times on Monday at Michigan International Speedway in preparation for his MIS debut in the Flagstar 200 in June.

Bozell, still in an unsponsored machine turned the fifth quickest lap of the day after maneuvering his Sappanos-Bozell Racing entry around the two-mile oval in 40.960 seconds equaling a speed of 175.781 MPH. This was within a ½ second of the fastest lap turned during the test session.

However, when the team returns to the track next month, look for that time and speed to improve, as the team faced an engine failure during the session, cutting the day short.

"We turned a pretty good time, but we have more on the table," said Bozell, who has competed in one ARCA race in 2004 at Nashville. "We had a miss in the motor later in the run, and instead of taking a chance of losing the whole motor, we packed up and headed home early," said the 2003 Michigan State Modified Champion.

The team will arrive at the legendary oval looking to recover. At Nashville, the No. 38 Holiday Inn Pontiac Grand Prix was running in the top five before a miscue in the pits cost Phil several laps, and a career best finish.

"We will not let what happened at Nashville happen again," said the avid late model driver. "It was a simple miscue, but a huge mistake that cost us dearly for potential sponsors and the owners," he added.

Bozell, who currently sits second in NASCAR's Dodge Weekly Racing Series points, at his home track in Kalamazoo will run his second Superspeedway next month. The team will then regroup; focus on sponsorship and their late Model events with hopes of competing in the ARCA debut event from Gateway International Raceway.

"Much like everyone we are looking for sponsorship," explained the 21-year old driver. "However, we are running strong in the late models, and while we've got our focus their, our main goal is to join the ARCA tour full time."

In addition to the Superspeedway events, Bozell the 2003 runner up in the Kalamazoo Klash, a premier late model shootout at the speedway hopes to land enough sponsorship that will allow the team to enter the short track at Toledo. He is no stranger to the Ohio based track, as in 2002 Phil put on a spectacular show and captured the ARCA truck win.

While the ARCA RE/MAX Series invades Kentucky Speedway this weekend, Bozell will be at home preparing for a double-header in his late model. "So far this year we have won both heat races and finished second in both feature events. We will have two races in one night this week, I am hoping to win them both," he exclaimed.
