2006 NASCAR Champion JR Norris Looks Towards a New Series
Young Driver Will Make His ARCA RE/MAX Series Debut at Nashville
MONTGOMERY, AL (March 31, 2007) -- In 2006, JR Norris made sure that his name went down in the history books of stock car racing as he went out and claimed the final NASCAR Southeast Series Championship. Now the champion is preparing for a new era as he prepares to compete in his first ARCA RE/MAX Series event next weekend at Nashville Superspeedway (TN).
"I am a little nervous, but I have a lot of confidence going into this weekend," said Norris. "The Bobby Jones Racing team and I tested really well. I don't spend a lot of time being nervous about it, most of the time thinking about what we can do, and what we can try in practice to make us as good as we possibly can be for the race."
Norris is no stranger to the Nashville track. In addition to recent testing, he has a winning record there. In 2005, he found himself standing in the NASCAR Southeast Series Nashville victory lane. Now Norris looks to be able to find himself in the familiar victory lane... along with that familiar guitar.
"We have won at Nashville before but now it is a totally different ball game. The ARCA cars are a lot different. Some of it is the same, like the line you run around the race track is all the same, but the way you drive it and the way you have to finesse it with these tires is a lot different."
Earlier this month, Norris headed up to Nashville to test with the Bobby Jones ARCA RE/MAX Series team. Norris got some more laps on the track that he has already mastered, and the team posted solid times throughout the session.
"The test went pretty good. I wanted it to go better, but you can only expect so much the first time out in a new race car. I think we are going to have a really good car for the race. I think that we are definitely a top-five car, especially with me improving as I get to learn the car more. We might get ourselves in position to be up front during the race.
"It also makes the adjustment a little easier going to a track that I am familiar with, even though it is a totally different car. The characteristics of the race track don't change and I go into it knowing what to expect from the race track, so I just have to focus on learning the car and I don't have to worry about learning the track at the same time."
Despite it being his ARCA RE/MAX debut, and the fact that the Champion is now a rookie, Norris is optimistic about his chances this coming weekend.
"We might luck out and win it," added Norris. "I am just excited about going, I know that we are going to have a good car and we have a really good team. We will just have to see what happens and we may end up front."
The ARCA RE/MAX Series event at Nashville Superspeedway will get underway Saturday April 7th at 12:00pm.
