Lebanon, TN (8-4-03) -- Last April, Shelby Howard could have very easily finished the ARCA Nashville race among the top three cars. Unfortunately, halfway through the event, he was on the receiving end of a massive hit, which caused major damage to his mount. Howard had to drop out early, finishing the night in 36th and completing only 66 of 113 laps.
Unable to capitalize on his best Nashville start (7th) ever, the eighteen-year-old Howard expects to finish this weekend what was left undone in the spring. This Saturday could also prove to be the perfect time to improve on his track career-best finish of 9th, which came in his first visit to the 1.33-mile superspeedway, back in April 2002.
"Coming to Nashville is always a blast," commented Howard. "Our Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge was running great (last spring). Unfortunately, we had to drop out early. The guys at the shop have done an awesome job getting the car ready (over the past two weeks), so we will be tough.
"The racing is always solid at Nashville and the track is very fast and smooth. We're ready to get back out there and battle for all it's worth."
Howard will have the same car he ran last month at Pocono. Repairs have been made and the Dodge looks better than ever.
"This car should be a perfect fit for Nashville," said Howard. "We've got our notes from the spring, so hopefully we won't have to change much. Eddie (Kelley, crew chief) and the crew have been in top form all year, so I know they'll put a good car under me again."
Howard is currently 6th in the ARCA RE/MAX point standings, but could cut into the deficit considerably this weekend. Only 55 points separate him from third place.
The Waste Management 200 takes the green at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 9. The race will be televised live on SPEED Channel.
