NOTE FROM THE BEACH BOYS MOTORSPORTS TEAM: The entire Beach Boys Motorsports team would like to express their extreme sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks this past Tuesday. At a time like this, auto racing seems quite trivial. However, the team will support the decision by the staff Toledo (OH) Speedway, ARCA and NAMARS to run the Midget race slated for this Saturday, and will be in attendance at the race. The team is requesting that our "family" in racing keep those affected by this unfathomable tragedy, as well as the entire nation, in prayer.
(Donnelsville, OH) - Teddy Beach and the Beach Boys Motorsports Team will return to one of Northwest Ohio's premier racing venues, Toledo Speedway, this coming Saturday, September 15th, for a NAMARS / ARCA Midget racing showdown (race is co-sanctioned by both NAMARS and ARCA). They are hoping to repeat the success they achieved the last time they visited that track after ending up in victory circle. Both the previous visit to Toledo Speedway, as well as this weekend's event, are to be televised (tape-delayed) on the Speedvision cable network.
The ½-mile paved oval is not the only challenge 17-year-old Teddy will face on Saturday. He is in a tight points battle with Travis Miniea for the NAMARS Championship Midget title, a mere 37 points behind the leader for that coveted honor. But that has not distracted him from his ultimate goal of repeating a victory at Toledo. With a new track surface awaiting the Midget racing competitors (track resurfaced in the last two weeks), Teddy knows he's got his work cut out for him Saturday.
"I'm a lot more confident now that I know the track. I know the line and I'm familiar with the competition," said a determined Teddy. "Those ARCA guys - they're really tough, especially since we're sort of invading their own "home turf." Now that they have resurfaced the track, it's going to be the same for everyone. With the old surface, the ARCA guys knew it well and had raced on that track for years and they knew the places to run and how the track would change. Now, with the new surface, the competition will even out more. We are an adaptive team and we can change with the track. I'm really hoping we can pull out another win."
Toledo Speedway is quickly becoming a favorite track for Teddy and the Beach Boys Motorsports team. A win helped, but regardless of the outcome, the team enjoyed their last visit to the facility earlier in the summer.
Teddy explains his recent experience at this northwestern Ohio speedplant: "Toledo (Speedway) is sweet. I really like Toledo. Everything is nice. They draw a good crowd, and we tend to put on a good show. It's a real fast place. It's competitive, and everyone is fast there."
Teddy's Beach Boys Motorsports team has spared no expense in getting the right equipment underneath him in his quest to gain experience and do well this year in the various NAMARS series'. However, that apparent advantage is not quite as prominent at Toledo as other tracks the team has visited. "Even the guys driving Volkswagens are fast there! With the NAMARS 850 pound weight rule (cars can not weigh less than 850 lbs. after the race is over), everyone can contend. There's a high level of competition there and you have to be on top of your game and know what to do there. That's the thing - he Volkswagen guys are as fast as the teams with the big Ford motors, which makes the racing really close. When I came to Toledo for the first time, I was hoping my engine would be able to get me down the straights a bit better than most other cars, but the Volkswagens carry so much momentum going around the corners that they are right there with you when you exit the corners. It's kind of aggravating, to tell you the truth (laughing). But it's fun being able to race with everyone. It's a neat track - the layout is really cool. It's a fun place to race."
Teddy and his championship-contending Beach Boys Motorsports team will undoubtedly be strong and near the front of the pack on Saturday. The team, regardless of the outcome, would like to dedicate this Saturday's effort to the memories of the victims of the terrorist attacks, as well as to the courage and heroism of the rescue and medical workers, as well as the thousands of volunteers who have been so brave throughout this week in their attempts to help in any way they can.
