Howard carries momentum to MIS

Brooklyn, MI (June 11, 2003) -- Michigan International Speedway is a momentum racetrack. The 2.0-mile oval is one of the most difficult tracks on the ARCA circuit and one of only a handful that 17-year-old Shelby Howard has not had any success on worth mentioning. With a full head of steam behind him, Howard will set out to change all of that this weekend.

Last June, Howard and his crew never could find the right setup and fought as long as they could until an engine problem developed, ending their day early in 30th place.

Howard, who doesn't turn 18 until July 25, has made noted improvement this season. Two wins, five Top 5s, and six Top 10s in nine starts have stirred interest from those in the garage. Enough interest in fact to start the rumors flying about his move to NASCAR next season.

Ignoring that for the moment, immediate attention flies to the team's speedway package which is starting to solidify. One win and three Top 5s in six races at large tracks this year stand as proof.

"Last year, that was probably the weakest part of our team," said Howard. "We were a rookie team so we had never seen most of the tracks and had nothing to fall back on when it comes to setups. We are much more comfortable in that area now and what changes we must make as we go through a race weekend. We aren't quite where we need to be yet, but we're getting there. I can't say enough about the job that Eddie (Kelley), Shawn (Amor), and the rest of the guys have been doing. They are an awesome group to have in my corner."

Coming off his second win two weeks ago at Kansas, Howard is positive the team will show marked improvement over last year's performance at Michigan.

"The Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge has gotten better each and every week. Ernie Elliott gives us powerful engines every time out and our pit stops have been unbelievable. We have a lot of momentum right now and that's important going to Michigan."

The ARCA RE/MAX Series heads to Michigan International Speedway this weekend for the running of the Flagstar 200. The green flag drops at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 14 and the race will be aired later that evening on SPEED Channel at 8:00 pm EDT.
