Simko hopes to impress at Michigan
Brooklyn, MI (Thursday June 12th, 2003) - - Michael Simko returns to the ARCA RE/MAX series tour this weekend in front of his hometown crowd. It will be Michael's first attempt at the Speedway and while the rookie driver does not have any experience at the facility, he remains confident heading into the event.
"I am excited about returning to racing," said Simko. "I am not sure what to expect this weekend at MIS, but I am hoping it will be just as good or even better than Kentucky."
In his last outing at Kentucky Speedway he finished an impressive eighth after starting tenth in his first Superspeedway race. "I had a lot of fun at Kentucky, we had a good weekend, and we learned a lot," he said. Michael sustained some minor damage to his No. 75 Michigan Steel Erectors Pontiac Grand Prix in a late race battle, which may have caused him from a better finish.
"It was a racing deal, I'm not sure what we would have been able to do, if we didn't have that contact, but we were able to recover from that and have a solid finish."
The second generation driver heads to the track located in the "Irish Hills" of Michigan, knowing that there will be several eyes on the ARCA event. "Saturday will be filled with some NASCAR Winston Cup veterans competing, and several team owners watching, so it wouldn't hurt if we walked out of there on Saturday with a great run."
Simko, who will be attempting to make his fourth start in the No. 75 Mound Steel and Supplies of the season is aiming for a lot. "I want to practice well, qualify in the top 15, and race as competitive as possible," he said. "When I head on to the track for the first time on Thursday, it's going to take me a couple of laps to get a rhtymn, after that it's all about racing."
The Clarkston, Michigan native will once again be using the same Pontiac Grand Prix that the team used last month at Kentucky with associate sponsorship from Michigan Steel Erectors. "We have a good superspeedway car, it's a former MB2 Motorsports machine driven by Ken Schrader, and it ran good in May, there's no reason why it shouldn't do the same this weekend."
His 2003 ARCA RE/MAX series plans continue to be based on sponsorship. Once again he will be driving the No. 75 Michigan Steel Erectors Grand Prix, but the team is continuing to search with hopes of attracting a sponsor that will allow the team to compete in more events this year.
"Our schedule is still up in the air at this point, we're hunting for sponsorship, and if were able to gain a sponsor we'll go racing, if not, we'll have to regroup and see what we can do." Simko noted.
The Flagstar 200 is set for this Saturday June 14th, 2003. The 11th event for the 2003 ARCA RE/MAX Series competitors will take the green flag shortly after 1:00pm. The SPEED channel will have same-day coverage with the race scheduled to be broadcasted from 8:00-10:00pm that night.
